Classes This Weekend and Kristin's Best Foot Forward Sock Yarn Giveaway

This coming Saturday and Sunday are the first “Get Stitched on the Farm” classes here at Leyden Glen Farm! The weather is supposed to be beautiful which will make things even more fun. I’m continuing to prepare. To say this is a lot of work is an understatement and I hope I can get everything on my “to do” list done. It may be unattainable. At this point, I’m taking a quick break to write this blog post before scrubbing the studio floor. I wish Cinderella lived here but alas, it is only me.

Living on a farm on a dirt road lends all kinds of challenges. Animals running in and out of the house, dirt on everyone’s boots, dust coming in the windows from the dirt road. Although I present this all with a romantic twist, it is a comedy of errors most times. I am currently fighting with “Crazy Chicken” and trying to reclaim my mudroom and put a fresh coat of paint on the benches. She isn’t happy and continues to plop herself in there every night. At this point, I’m not sure who is winning.

I didn’t get enough students to run both classes in August so this weekend is the only August class. It was probably a stupid, over-ambitious plan considering the state of the economy. Two classes within 2 weeks – what was I thinking? There will be a huge learning curve with this project! I have cancelled the August 15-16 class if you were on the fence. There is still a space available this weekend if you love a last minute thing!

I have set a date for a September “Sunflower Immersion” weekend. The plan is to celebrate the sunflowers blooming and knit floral Fair Isle designs and embroider a sunflower pillow top. I’m still in the planning stages but check the date and sign up soon. I promise a really fun time.

“Sunflower Immersion” Knitting and Stitching Weekend
at Kristin’s Farm

September 19 and 20

We continue to have so much rain. It has a been a real challenge even getting the sunflowers to come up this year. We finally got to planting about 7 rows of sunflowers last Tuesday and then came another 8 to 10 inches of rain. Not sure if those seeds will rot or germinate! There are a few rows that are growing slowly. We shall see!

To celebrate my upcoming “Get Stitched On the Farm” weekend, I am running a “giveaway” here on the blog. It just so happens that this is the week that my new sock yarn “Best Foot Forward” from Nashua Handknits is shipping to yarn stores throughout the USA and Canada. I have 1 skein of Best Foot Forward yarn for 3 different knitters. One skein will make a pair of socks. Leave your name in the comments section along with an easy way to get a hold of you. You have until Monday morning at 7 a.m. August 3rd to enter. I’ll draw the 3 winners sometime on Monday after I recuperate from my knitting guests!

I’ll be sure to post pictures from the weekend sometime next week.

  28. I would come in a heart beat..but I am so far away..way far.
You have inspired me in more ways than you can imagine..I am a bit of a knitter..but struggle with it at times; I can embroider and have been inspired by your books; the color and joyous art in your home fills me with joy.
On another "front" I totally understand the dirt, dust, animals in the house. When you live with your family on a farm and no one else comes, the time is filled with just working. When someone comes...whoa..all of the work, cleaning up, tidying, and animals needing attention....wheee.
I wish you the very best for your classes...and I, too, wish for a little fairy to help.
Your sunflowers have inspired me to plant over 200 this year. They are beginning to bloom and every time I look at them, I think about you. Reality here...the grass fed beef that we have were in the sunflowers today!!!
The very best to you. I would send you some heat and sun if you would send me some rain.

(having trouble here, hope this doesn't come up three times)

  43. The truth be known, we all have parts of our houses that don't bear close inspection. But when friends come, I believe that folks are coming for you and your expertise, not to inspect! Just relax and enjoy the day with fellow knitters and let them see/understand the fun of being on a farm, which usually includes mud or dust (depending on the time of year). I would be there if I lived closer, but you are at least a two day drive away. I admire your willingness to put yourself and the farm out there! best wishes.

If you all can live there without contracting botulism I think other people can manage to visit a couple of days without succumbing. Living on a dirt road in the middle of the woods I know all about dust and mud - you can't do a thing about it.

If I had managed to find a job, I'd be there. So I'm hoping I can at least win some yummy new sock yarn to keep me happy and occupied.

  107. Such beautiful work. I am looking forward to having your sock yarn. If I don't win it I will save for it.

I hope sometime during the busy workshop at your home you will be able to enjoy your guests and realize how much you have to offer them - such expertise, such passion!

  110. I've followed your blog for so long, but am not much on commenting. However, I want to tell you how much I enjoy your photos, color work, your house/farm, etc.--very inspiring. I know your "Best Foot" will be "Forward" as your guests arrive and a good time will be had by all. I am an OSU alum that still lives about 23 miles from Corvallis. Hope I can win some of that beautiful sock yarn! ken_ballard43 at msn dot com

I don't need the yarn, although I'd love it, so if you happen to pick me, please send it to a charity or give it to someone who is in need and can't afford to buy it.

  112. Hi there, Kristin. I can just picture you getting the house all ready--oh, my dear, try not to get too stressed about it. I know, easier said than done.

This rain is making us crazy. We gave up completely on the vegetable garden, our first garden since we moved here, and just mulched it. We'll try again in the early fall with some cold weather crops like spinach, and hope for less rain next year. And the poor sheep have had it up to here with the rain, too. We got the last of our flock, and the llamas, sheared this afternoon just before the skies opened up yet again. Yeesh.

And sure, enter me in the yarn giveaway. I'm not a sock fanatic, but it would be fun to make some socks for Lorelei from your awesome yarn.

“Sunflower Immersion” Knitting and Stitching Weekend. The day after my 45th birthday...what a treat that would be. Alas, some things are meant to dream about. :)

Congrats on the first class at the farm. You will do wonderfully and if you do forget something, improvise.

The classes sound so wonderful, can't come right away because I spent my precious summer self-employed funds on Sock Summit transit/registration.

I've been to Brattleboro and Northampton, both good experiences. I could live in Bratt. any day.

One friend lives in Readsboro VT (north of N. Adams Mass) and another in Keene NH. I've been out there several times. Lovely.

Oddly, we have it in abundance here in Arlington, TX, too - where the normal environmental problem in August is grass fires from drought. (That makes mopping not such a bad alternative, I suppose.)
