Half German (from his mother's side), he was a little gruff and crabby on the outside, but he sure was a softy inside. When we had seconds at dinner he'd complain that we were eating his lunch! But he'd take walks with us to the cranberry bogs, and tell us funny stories about our ancestors, and clearly loved us so very much.
