I've been reading the book and daydreaming about projects all week. I already had a collection of your yarns and I filled out what I needed from the colors available at Webs. Of course, that means I'm not using exactly the colors you did, but I love the way so many of them look together and I'm having a blast.Annehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16478302169295463555noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23619317.post-17833874723386972542015-03-16T19:22:56.156-04:002015-03-16T19:22:56.156-04:00Hi Suze - My mom always bought us the best supplie...Hi Suze - My mom always bought us the best supplies when we were learning to sew and stitch -not outrageously expensive but not cheap-o. I do believe that is why I got sucked into all this - the colors and textures, etc. So, yes I believe that good supplies help kids learn b/c they are easier to work with.

Quilting cotton is okay w/ cotton floss if you separate it down but it won't work w/ the wool thread. Best to use wool or wool blend felt and linen fabric w/ the wool thread.

KristinKristin Nicholashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09038900681076035087noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23619317.post-66425418254349179852015-03-16T18:15:53.224-04:002015-03-16T18:15:53.224-04:00But I want ALL the colors! Right now we're using cotton floss and scraps of cotton fabric but I have some linen stashed away we may try next. It's not incredibly high quality linen but it will probably be easier to work with than wutinf cotton
I really do believe quality of materials matters just as much for beginners in any craft. The tactile experience is what we enjoy about it after all
Thanks so much for your thoughtful response!
Susan (Madtown_mama on IG, Madtownmama on Rav)Suzehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05090954944438450837noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23619317.post-81305890437516503972015-03-16T13:36:55.251-04:002015-03-16T13:36:55.251-04:00Hi Suze - Yes - you are so correct that crewel woo...Hi Suze - Yes - you are so correct that crewel wool is much easier to stitch w/ than the cotton floss. It fills in much better and looks better. That is a great factor with kids because they feel so good about what they are doing when it looks good.

You might want to order just the small sample package from my website which has 10 colors in it that I think will appeal to your kids.

http://kristinnicholas.com/ProductDetail.cfm?index=118

If you have any felt (I prefer wool but acrylic will do) it is also a great fabric for kids to stitch on.

I do think that sometimes the older floss can be more difficult to stitch w/. I barely stitch w/ cotton because I so much prefer the wool.

Can't wait to see what your son stitches. That is awesome!

Thanks for writing.
KristinKristin Nicholashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09038900681076035087noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23619317.post-87085851097052857422015-03-15T22:41:37.053-04:002015-03-15T22:41:37.053-04:00I'm craving color like that, now that winter i...I'm craving color like that, now that winter is ending but spring hasn't quite started. In Wisconsin, at least, the snow is melting, but we didn't get as much here as you did this year! (My brother and his wife live near Boston, so we've heard tales of all the blizzards...)
Anyway, I am dropping by to leave this comment because my daughter Anya embroidered a patch for a neck warmer for her dad's birthday that I shared with you on IG. Now my son has been learning some stitches and wants to make some things like a pillow cover and maybe a bag. He's 9, so he doesn't want his friends to know (social pressure starts so early) but I'm so happy he still wants to learn. How can we get past this stigma with boys doing needlework, I wonder? Maybe get some NFL players stitching...
Anyway, I have a question: I'm not very skilled at embroidery (I'm definitely more of a knitter) but all I have at home is cotton floss. Is crewel wool easier to work with? I'm tempted to order some from your website to see if my kids can handle it better. The floss they've been using (old stuff I inherited from grandmothers) tends to twist and tangle.
Suzehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05090954944438450837noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23619317.post-88817389523371329732015-03-14T02:45:47.875-04:002015-03-14T02:45:47.875-04:00That's an amazing blanket/afghan. I appreciate, as well, your detailed tutorial of sewing a fabric back to a knit pillow, . . something I've yet to learn.
The afghan is joyously singing its color song & the kitty certainly enjoys it too !
