Heart to Heart Mittens + The Biggest Get Stitched on the Farm Giveaway YET!

The holidays are creeping up, aren't they? Thanks to everyone who has ordered patterns and cards. I am having fun imagining all of you sitting in your comfy armchairs knitting flowers, bags, mittens, and more every evening. Me, I'm working on a new pattern for you all that I hope to introduce not too long after the new year. Fingers Crossed on that!

I wanted to let you in on a great holiday quick knit. It is my "Heart to Heart Mittens" that are sized for from toddlers to adults. Here's how this pattern came about. Last year during the Amherst Winter Farmers Market, I started knitting and designing a new pair of mittens for Julia. She has a tendency to lose mittens and it is always nice to have an extra pair in the wings. Every week, my fellow vendors stopped by to see how they were progressing.

I didn't intend to make them into a pattern, they were just busy work for me when the customers weren't lining up. When they were done, I decided they were too pretty not to share. I set about writing the pattern, then doing the charts. I photographed them on Miss Julia (under much duress from her).
As I was editing the photos, I realized that although these mittens, with multiple hearts on them were maybe a bit difficult for a normal knitter who wasn't quite as colorwork obsessed as moi (yes, we have seen the new Muppets Movie, gotta love that Miss Piggie). So I started knitting again and this is what I came up with.....

Here she is throwing snowballs at me..... "Ahhh, Mom, are you done yet? PLEEEEEASE stop taking pictures."

Version Two - the One Heart Mittens are a simpler colorwork pattern still with the heart motif but not quite as colorwork crazy. They are sized in 4 sizes from toddlers to adults. Here's why you might want to try knitting up some of the "Single Heart to Heart Mittens" for Christmas gifts.
1. The design begins with easy Reverse Stockinette Stitch Ridges
2. The colorwork happens in Fair Isle after the thumb shaping is completed. No worrying about increasing for the thumb and working in two colors.
3. They are worked on double pointed needles so they really rip along.
4. There are two great videos on my YouTube Channel to help you with the embroidery...
Those are the two stitches that are worked around the heart to really dress it up and put the mittens over the top beautiful. Here's a view of them in front of our old bread oven that is in our living room. (Yes we do use it - we make awesome pizza in it - how cool is that?)

The PDF pattern includes both designs - The Many Heart Mittens and the One Heart Mittens. I find the heart design such a gorgeous knitting motif. It kind of speaks to how you feel about the person you are knitting for. We knitters make a lot to express our love for our family and friends. What a great way to visually show this with heart mittens. With the addition of the two embroidery stitches, it really make the heart design stand out.

Hop on over to my Shop Page to order the pattern or on Ravelry Here

Now on to the best giveaway yet. This is to celebrate my inclusion in Knitting Contrissmas, the wonderful series of interviews organized and generously posted by Tina Kim, the author of the blog Knitting Contessa. My interview will be December 6th tomorrow. Here's what I have for you all.

I'm currently working on a set of woven towels for my mother, and I may possibly be knitting some socks for my niece. There was more on the list, but as usual, the holiday snuck up on me. You'd think by now I'd have figured it out!

WOW! That's a spectacular giveaway! I am making handmade gifts: Christmas stockings for my nephews, a sweater for a baby nephew, a bluebird, headband, mittens, socks, more socks, even more socks, a scarf, etc! I knit throughout the year and stockpile gifts for Christmas and birthdays. I've even made a couple non-knit gifts this year. It is definitely shaping up to be a year of handmade gifts!

Am I making handknit gifts for the holidays, oh yes! Haruni for my mom, Annis for my sister, 98yards of heaven for my soon to be SIL, Little Arrowhead shawl for my MIL, SpillyJane's gnome mittens for the Hubs, and then brand new sweaters for my two girls designed by me but not released yet, a tie for Dad aso not released yet, a hat for my brother not released yet either. I have to add that I started knitting in January this year as I wanted it to be a year of lace and not a big time crunch in December! I am anythingbutsnow on Ravelry :) xoxo

I always end up making more than I imagined, with one or two last-minute-why-did-I-do-this-myself prezzies. This year the list includes: home-made jams and jellies (grape, black raspberry, strawberry lemon, and cranberry-pear), honey-dill mustard (very hot) and kimchee-pepper honey mustard (even hotter for the crazies in my circle), a knit Citron scarf (see Ravelry) and a pin I made from a vintage button for a girl-friend, mittens for another dear friend, a sewn yoga bag from African batik for my mom and for my nephew, a pin and a pair earrings from vintage buttons for a new friend, a pink knit lace scarf for the friend who loves pink, wow this list is getting longer than I thought.... So you can see that I have plenty of time to knit even more (next year), when I'll begin a hat and booties for a baby shower in yummy sock yarn. It is the color -- I love all the color! I would seriously love to win this package. Thank you for the splendid gift of your world via your blog and your creativity which so inspires me. Merry Christmas and all the best in the new year.

Awesomest giveaway EVER!!! I'm super excited just reading about it. I'm working on some embroidered pillowcases for my niece and a quilt for my sister. The quilt is actually for her birthday but since it's three days after Christmas (very inconsiderate of my parents) I feel like it's a Christmas gift. I'm also baking cookies and dog biscuits for my family and friends. Busy, busy!!

Unknown said...

What a fabulous prize! I'm making mittens for three of my teenage nieces. Two are almost finished (do they really need thumbs?) and I need to start the last set. Not sure I'll have time to make much more than that!

Aunt Marti said...

I am making hats for my nieces and nephews. One great-niece asked for a black hat with pink flowers -- so I ordered the Quarters Cap and the Olympia Knit-Crochet Flowers patterns. This is a great hat pattern!

Jessica L'Heureux said...

Almost exclusively all my holiday gifts are handmade this year. Mother and sister are getting lacy shawls, hubby gets a requested hat (and socks if I have time), my boss and his wife are getting a hat and shawl respectively, and I have two friends I'm hoping to do shawls for as well. Yikes... I should be knitting, not typing!

Thanks for the giveaway. My Christmas gift knitting is modest. Two pairs of fingerless mitts for my sisters and maybe Hufflepuff colored mittens for my daughter. Only the mittens are left to go so I don't think I'm fooling myself. :-)

I'm making gloves for one of my best buds - not a surprise present, as she approved the color/yarn/style and has been trying them on for fit as I work on them - but she loves them, and I've have lots of fun. (First pair of gloves I've ever knitted)!

What a GREAT giveaway! Thank you!

The only gift knitting I will finish this year is a doggie sweater for Chloe...our Granddog!

The Sexy Knitter said...

What beautiful mittens! Being a fan of color, I love the multi-hearted version. :)

I originally intended to keep the handmade gifts at a minimum this year, but it seems I keep adding just one more thing! At this point, the list includes two woven scarves, a crocheted hat, some pajama pants, an apron, and a scrub hat. I've already finished the baby sweater, but I still have an adult sweater to finish up!

...you know, now that I write that all out, it doesn't seem very likely that it'll all get done...

Sharon said...

I am making lots of handmade gifts -- but they are for others to buy and give (i hope) --- folks on my gift list will most likely receive handmade gifts by artisans I admire

What wonderful giveaways. I am making a few homemade presents this year. A ruffled scarf for a friend, a skull cap for another friend and I just finished a dinosaur sweater for my son. Would love to win the stash of your yarn!

I am not knitting as much this year as I did last year when I made all my nephews and neice hats. (I don't want to develop the crazy aunt reputation) But I am making one of my nephews fingerless gloves (he told me he likes black and pruple) and I am making a sock monkey for my nine month old neice. I better get started soon.
But after seeing what some other people are making for Christmas I don't think I have anything to be worried about.
Thanks for the opportunity to win these lovely prizes. I love reading you blog!

I'm working on some Christmas stockings. I've been telling my mother I'd knit some for the family since I learned to knit (maybe 10 years ago?). I figure I owe them. I'm nearly done with the second, and they're quick knits, so hopefully I'll get them done in time!

I try to make handmade gifts throughout the year, but not at the holidays since it's already so crazy and I don't need the extra stress :)

mamaross said...

I can't believe everyone in the world has not signed up for this giveaway. I'm probably the party pooper of the crowd because we don't celebrate Christmas and my knitting is no more deadline driven at this time of year than any other. That being said, I have recently finished hats for my boys and I'm working on socks for one of my daughters while I wait for a good deal on the yarn needed to make a hat for my other daughter. I'm also in the process of weaving some placemats and some towels, but as they are learning pieces they are somewhat less than gift-worthy and I'm pretty sure they'll end up being gifts for my own kitchen.

Mariah said...

A close friend has begun chemo treatments and as I was trying to think about ways in which I could help, it came to me just this morning: a hat! I could knit a very soft hat for her for Christmas--we do live in Maine, after all. I'm headed to the stash right now!

Julie said...

Now that's a giveaway! I am working on a lace scarf and my daughter is making lots of friendship bracelets. (Has Julia discovered those yet - popular items and made with floss!)

Mary G said...

Of course I'm making hand-mades!

First there are the knitted candy-cane ponies for the boys' club I run; then there are the yarn ball ornaments for the girls' club. Then I'm knitting up some snowflakes for family in the South (doesn't snow much down there usually) ... then I've got fingerless mitts to do for the 3 still at home, and a Hello Kitty hat to make for my great-niece. Then I am resting!!!!!

and the giveaway is amazing. I love Julia yarn and am saddened it is discontinued. The collection would be amazing to have. Thanks for the chance.

Fab giveaway! I've made three afghans (and a half that isn't finished yet!), a baby blanket, a nursing modesty coverup, a pair of booties, as well as a leaf beret and matching scarf (beret is made from an original pattern "invented" by a Brazilian friend). The beret and scarf set is for the lovely woman who minds our office pantry, makes coffee, sets up luncheons, etc. Because I now use a cane, about 6 months ago she voluntarily began to bring me coffee and ice water every morning so I don't have to make the trek from the kitchen, balancing cane, cups, etc.

I made a cowl for my aunt... all it needs is blocking and buttons. Which I swear always take me longer than the knitting. Other than that I have a pair or 2 of socks I'm trying to get finished. Though I think only one pair might be done in time.

I'm in a making frenzy over here, between stuff for my shop and family. It's getting crazy, but that's the holidays, right? I've been on a crochet cowl kick, so that's what most of the males in the family are getting. Why are guys so hard to get for??? I'm actually teaching my cousin to make jewelry for her Christmas gift from me, so I'm not sure if that counts. I've got to make her some sort of organized pouch for tools and supplies, too! Much to do, much to do!

Kitten With a Whiplash said...

I'm sorry to say my holiday knitting plans are shot for this year. I spent the other night frogging about a month's worth of knitting - over 40,000 stitches! I'd made a dress for Mom for Christmas - a stockinette bodice with entrelac accents, with a large-scale entrelac skirt. I've never done this large of an entrelac project before, so I didn't realize the stockinette gauge would be wildly inaccurate for that section. I lightly steam-blocked the skirt, and the hem circumfrence, which was supposed to be 42", blocked out to 68". I don't think Mom's ever worn a hoop skirt, and I doubt if she wants to start at age 85! It was also about 5-6" shorter than expected, so it would have been a mid-calf hoop skirt at that. I'll get it reknit, but not in time for Christmas.
Thanks for the super-generous giveaway!

I made the fairy and tulip purse for my DD; the Musical Monkey for our neighbor; 2 hats (so far) for our local Safehouse for women & children; a shrug for DD's Christmas dress; a hat for my best friend's son; a sweater for a new baby in the family; and *hopefully* I'll finish a Pam Powers' cowl for my grandma and an earflap hat for my son! Phew! Didn't realize until now how much I've actually accomplished. Thanks for that! ;)

I'm making hats for everyone this Xmas. Last year I was more ambitious, making different things for everyone, and not all of the projects got finished. (Except my husband who doesn't wear hats and will get a pair of socks!)

There are four pair of mittens being taken to the bank this week for the holiday mitten tree and two scarfs will be draped over that too. Me? I had planned to make my husband his annual woolen vest, but haven't even started it yet. I also had considered making a shawl for someone, but that likely isn't going to happen, either. We used to give alot of homemadegifts-jam, etc, but that has fallen by the wayside. Over all, we give fewer gifts to everyone.

Nice giveaway! To be honest, no one in my family wants and/or appreciates my knitting. Last Christmas my sister said - oh my god not another piece of crap that I won't use. My DH never wears his socks. I've made 3 sweaters for my DD and she has never worn them, and she picked them out. I'm not a bad knitter. But I only knit for myself and my dogs. So nothing going for Christmas. I am knitting a sample sweater for a yarn company, so I'm busy!

Wow - an electric ball winder!! I just wound off 8 skeins this afternoon, so you know that sounds good to me :-)
I'm mostly working on baby gifts/holiday presents. Everyone I
know seems to be having a child/grandchild. It's very nice. Luckily they're small, although when you're working on 4 at one time, it seems nothing gets completed! Thanks for your wonderful blog. I stocked up on Julia yarn when I saw your announcement, but more would always be appreciated! Rav ID-

No homemade gifts from this year unfortunately. I had a late start this year so maybe, just maybe, things will be ready by Valentine's Day :)

I hand wind all of my yarn so I could use the electric ball winter or the yarn. Pick me :)

Most of my gifts are handmade: jelly, granola, bird feeders, felted clogs, fingerless mitts, goat's milk fudge. Too much fun!

Hi Kristin,
I've almost finished most of my gifts. I made my sister a Frosted leaves shawl, my mom a Catkin, my nephew a Wurm, and my niece a Fair Isle Tam. My canning and food experiment girlfriends are getting handmade aprons, crochet top kitchen towels, and crocheted pot scrubbers (maybe crocheted dishcloths if I get to it). My dad is getting a quilt that my mom and I made together. I'm working on an Around the World Afghan for a couple of my favorite people, although it's doubtful it will get done for Christmas. I also made JiJi the kitty for her and I'm working on a dragon for him, although I haven't quite figured out what pattern to use. I'm working on Labyrinth mitts for a girlfriend in CA and a hat for her husband. Aunts, Uncles and other deserving parties will be getting crocheted top towels, pot scrubbers and home canned jellies.

I started in June but I think it's going to be close to get it all done.

This is a beautiful assortment of items. Thank you for offering such a wonderful package. I am in the process of creating an ethnic doll for my new little niece from the Phillipines. She told me that she wants a dolly with skin like hers. So I a created an ethnic amigurumi doll for her and am in the process of creating clothing for the doll so she can play dress up. I can't help imagining what all those lovely colors of yarn could become. Thank you again for such a generous compilation of items.

I plan to knit some fingerless mitts and an infinity/cowl scarf or two for our friends. And maybe a pair of felted slippers. But the priority os a pair of socks for my MIL. I gave her a pair for her birthday a couple of years ago and she loved them. Then I found out through the grapevine that one was lost. She was so upset that she didn't want to tell me... so I am making her another pair AND a single matching sock to her other pair for Christmas.
She is an appreciator of handknits and a very good MIL.

I <3 those heart mittens! This winter I'm working on a pair of slippers for a friend. I also really want to get some ornaments done for gifts. Last winter I found a cute partridge with a pear pattern for ornaments. I might do a few of the partridges by themselves and stuff them with catnip for my cat and some friends' cats. You always have such nice giveaway items. Thank you for the generosity all year round! You can reach me at SusanNMarshallATgmailDOTcom.

I am hoping to whip out some more of your sunflower coasters for gifts too! Who knows what else I will squeeze in before Christmas? Maybe some teeny tiny MochiMochi Santa Clauses for ornaments? What a Wonderful Gift to receive from a very gifted person! I just knitted an afghan for my daughter who is expecting her first child in January. I am always knitting dishcloths, varying colors as seasons change for my 2 daughters for Birthdays and Christmas. Currently I am starting to knit mittens from a very old pattern for the new grandchild, when he or she is out in the snow. Also, being requested some new mittens for the new mom! I enjoy reading your blog everyday and the pictures of your farm and sheep, and dogs are great. I have watched Knit & Crochet on CreateTV. I would love to learn how to crochet the basic granny square as yours is pretty with the brown color around each square. Another days project!
Thanks for the chance to enter this contest.

I don't do a lot of knitting that is specifically for the holidays.

This year, I made a hat for my niece who loves pink. The pattern is your quarters cap with 4 different colors of pink yarn. I can't wait to give it to her.

I am also trying to make enough felted flowers to use instead of bows on most of my X-mas packages this year.

Keeping it at a pretty low-key level like this makes it fun.

I'll stop there b/c I have so much more in "list form". :) Hugs to you!

I'm making a bunch of hats. Might try a few mittens too. Usually I'm a lot further along in my knitting for Christmas presents by this time, so some of them may be late this year. I keep saying I should make simpler hats but then keep starting ones with cables and major stitch manipulation. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment.

Plus I have about 5 people having babies in my life so have been churning out baby sweaters! Hopefully they'll all get done before baby showers/births and Christmas :)

I love to knit Christmas presents! I made 3 men's hats, 2 cowls, 1 scarf, 2 baby hats and 3 pair of fingerless gloves - and counting!

Wow, what a wonderful giveaway! As to what I'm giving for Christmas, well, I've knitted 2 pairs of socks so far, a third on the needles, a cowl is done, the Saroyan scarf and the Rustling Leaves Beret. I think maybe the Ginkgo shawl is next, well if I don't run out of time.

This year the hand knits were given ahead of time. Good thing. Tomorrow - cardioversion for the hubby.
