I help out at my sons school as a substitute teacher I like the little ones so I only teach in the pre-school and Kindergarten classes. Our town has a wonderful special needs system and our teachers are fabulous. It was so nice to read your tribute to all of Julia's teachers and nurses over the years. In our pre-school class we have special needs children and they integrate in and out with the other children. Because I substitute I get to teach/learn from these wonderful teachers and children, I am inspired every time I am there. It is hard work and I just want you to know that when you leave your child at school you can completely trust that they are in good hands. These children are loved and cared for all day long, it is exhausting work, I don't know how the teachers do it everyday but they do and they do it with smiles and so much patience. My son is 7 he will be going into the 2nd grade (time flies) he does not have special needs, but what I like about teaching and being around these children is how much I learn from them, patience being the most important. It puts everything into perspective and when I get home I know how lucky I am and how much God has blessed me to be able to understand your world in just a fraction of what you do and to appreciate and be grateful for all I have. "A grateful heart is a magnet for miracles" unkown. I gave your first long blog post about Julia to my daughter, who was wrestling with her own special needs child and needed to know she was not alone. It gave her great comfort. Her son will be sixteen soon and she is trying to find a program for him as his current one closed down. I too worry about the future for him--and us all...

Your post was indeed a beautiful tribute to Julia and the people who brought her to this day. I read it with tears in my eyes for all of us who don't fit into the little boxes our society provides. No high school graduate these days can transition into adulthood without many helping hands, but she is well on her way. I have no doubt she will have many opportunities to share her gifts with the world and to find her way in it. As for the people snickering or mocking, not only are they pond scum completely lacking in empathy, but apparently lack the intelligence to realize that any of us, at any moment, can suffer a health problem and lose abilities. I hope they did not mar your wonderful day. I have to say after high school I would have been happy for him to find a job and just stick with it, but he decided to join the AF and after that he had the GI bill and he went back to school (college). He is creative and funny as all get out. SpEd teachers gave him the opportunities. Give your daughter a hug for me and tell her Congratulations! Julia has become a lovely and ,obviously, talented young lady. She always has the sweetest expression on her face. No wonder all her classmates stood up for her!
By the way, her woodworking is exceptional. She may well become an artist like you.
The education system has come very far since the passage of Federal law 94-172. It has opened a lot of doors to special needs kids who could mainstream.
I'm so glad it has worked out for Julia. However, she was so lucky to have advocates like you and your husband to see she did get all the help available. S for post high school, won't she be eligible for benefits until she is 21 or has that changed?
Well, anyway....
CONGRATULATIONS TO JULIA AND TO HER WONDERFUL PARENTS!!!!
xoxo,
janie hornJaniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16660547322217791472noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23619317.post-91641019094030054832017-06-16T14:03:19.556-04:002017-06-16T14:03:19.556-04:00What a beautifully written blog for a beautiful yo...What a beautifully written blog for a beautiful young woman! They along with you and your husband guided her but she is the one who did the work. This speaks to her inner core and her ability and dedication to be all that she has the potential to become. The last photo you posted of her, I think, reveals a bit of her inner beauty as well as her physical beauty.
