Friday Surprise

Look what we found in our pasture Friday afternoon.

Two cross-bred ewes both had fall lambs within a few minutes of each other out on the lush green grass. We don't often have lambs born this time of year. If you have followed this blog, you know we are deep into lambing in January, February and March. Most sheep only come into season beginning in August. That's why lambs are traditionally born in the spring (spring being January though May). But there are few breeds which will become pregnant year round, the Dorset sheep being one of them. These two ladies evidently have a fair bit of Dorset in their genes.


Julia loves to hold the baby lambs. As long as the mothers don't mind, we let her coddle the newborns.


September lambs are definitely a different experience than winter lambs - we don't have to worry about the cold and they start picking at the grass right away. It will be fun to watch these little ones grow this fall.
