I met Linda Perman when she was editor of Adorn, the now defunct cool sewing and craft magazine that was out a few years ago. I did a project for them and have kept in touch with Linda as she has moved around the USA - first to Montana and then to Texas, two places that sound great to live! During it all, she got a two book deal with Potter Craft and we have kept in touch. Linda writes the great blog "Lindamade."
I must admit, I don't crochet too much. I know the basics and I love a good granny. I've never had the desire to become a crochet designer but I'm glad Linda Perman did. Her books are colorful, clever, really fun, and very, very stylish. Her new book is Little Crochet and it is full of amazingly sweet crochet projects for babies and toddlers. The photography is drop dead gorgeous and the instrux look clear and well written, just as her first book Crochet Adorned was.
There are 24 fabulous projects for babies and toddlers up to 4 years old. I am really in love with the cover booties. Are they just too much? Little stars inset into the top of the bootie. Linda says you can whip up a pair in an evening.
And the next one is a colorful afghan worked in my Julia Yarn. It's called the Mix and Match Blanket. This blankie is so clever. To work it, you use the one chart given. All of the squares are made with the same chart but it gets mixed up by changing colors. Some of the squares have a solid color circle, some striped, and some feature a pinwheel design. Linda added embroidery to some of them also. She is a woman after my own heart! I could see this Blankie made much larger into an official Blanket and looking really great on a couch or a bed. What a really nice gift for a new baby..... you could keep adding squares as the baby grows. Here's the Ravelry Page for it.
Linda was kind enough to answer some questions I had about the Mix and Match Blanket.
KN: I'll admit it Linda. I can change color like a master when I'm knitting but I have no clue how to change color in the midst of a round in crochet. What is the secret?
LP: Really the key to nice color changes in crochet is this: complete the last stitch of the OLD color with the NEW color.
IE, for Double crochet: "With FIRST color, yarn over and insert hook in stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through first 2 loops on hook, yarn over with NEXT color, and draw through both remaining loops on hook. Continue working with next color."
Since the last yarn over of the stitch before the "first" stitch in the new color is the loop that lays on top of the stitch, you have to change colors a little before what you would do intuitively (which would be to start the next stitch with the new color). I hope that makes sense, there is an illustration in the appendix of the book under "Joining Yarns and Changing Colors."
KN: Okay Linda, I trust you. I've got an idea for a video tutorial for you now! Like you don't have enough on your plate! But seriously, I love how you used the one motif for the blanket but really mixed it up so it looks totally fun and colorful. How did you plan it?
LP: I knew when I was planning the book that I wanted to have at least one motif-based blanket. What I like about motifs is that they are easy to work and you can easily carry them along with you. I wanted to keep the pattern simple, because I'm someone who likes to put the pattern down after a while and just keep crocheting, so for the Mix and Match Motif Blanket, I based each of the squares on the same motif, with simple touches like color changes and embroidery to make each square feel different. It's easy to personalize the blanket and I also think it's a fun first colorwork project for those who are a little intimidated to mix and match colors.
KN: What was the inspiration behind the Mix & Match Blankie?
LP: I was really inspired by the color palette available in your Julia yarn, and in case any art buffs are reading, by the work of Jasper Johns. If you have trouble picking out colors for this project, look to a piece of fabric or a painting that you like--then look closer to see what colors are involved. If you start with something you know you like, it will make it easier to visualize your color scheme.
Linda also made this really cute video for a book trailer. If you watch it, you'll see everyone of the projects parade across your computer screen. Linda surely is a talented designer.
So here's what I have for you to win today. To celebrate the launch of Linda Perman's Little Crochet, I have enough Julia Yarn for the Mix and Match Motif Blanket and a copy of Linda's new book!
I'll make it easy for you to enter. All you have to answer is this question:
Do you knit, crochet, or embroider, or do you do a combo of all?
Contest is closed. The winner is cellobean who wrote: I love both, but barely get to either. I have always knitted, but taught my mother to crochet in the last few years of her life (she was a very accomplished woman and wasn't happy being less active and ill...the new skill gave her a boost!). I seem to do more dreaming about both than actual doing. I'd love to crochet the blanket! Love your blog.
I am mainly a knitter - I do that all the time - but I also crochet occasionally. Embroidery is another thing - I have quilt squares to embroider that I started 40 years ago when I was pregnant with my daughter that have been waiting to be finished all this time. I like to do it, but it is just not my first love - or I guess my second.
ReplyDeletemuch2knit@hotmail.com
I'm a knitter, but I think it would be very helpful to also crochet. Not only are there lots of times when a pattern calls for crochet edging, but I think an occasional crochet project would be a nice break from my usual knitting.
ReplyDeleteI knit and embroider. I learned them both from my mother more than 50 years ago and am very happy to have rediscovered them recently, AND to see so many young women interested and involved in these crafts. Crochet? My mom does that too, but it just never grabbed my interest, though there are some really cute projects out there now-like this book!

I am a crocheter and an embroiderer. My grandmother taught me and I taught my daughters. One of them, however, wasn't satisfied with just crocheting, so she taught herself how to knit and then a friend of mine even taught her how to spin. I tried to learn how to knit when she was first learning, but I just can't wrap my brain around the two needle thing. I guess I have been crocheting for too long... I'm brain locked. While I love making my own embroidery designs, I find that I just don't embroider as much as I would like to. Thank you for the giveaway opportunity!
ReplyDeleteI simply cant wait for this book! So excited!
ReplyDeleteI actually do a mix of all! I taught my self to knit first! Then a few months later I taught myself to crochet, and embroider! I was inspired to by catching a few episodes of Knit and Crochet Today on PBS, and its been an addiction ever since then! :)
~Catlyn
Mostly a knitter, but a self taught crocheter who would like to improve my skills. Sometimes my wrists hurt when knitting and crocheting is another skill and muscle set for balance.
ReplyDeleteI embroidered when I was younger, but not with these eyes!
bagatelle@comcast.net
I was first a crocheter - my Grandma taught me when I was very small- maybe 5 or so. I used to love to watch her crochet...Then she tried to teach me to knit when I was a bit older, but crochet was easier for both of us. Then when I was about 21 I taught myself how to knit. And I can embroider as needed, but it's not my strong suit! annegp on ravelry
ReplyDeleteI love to crochet. My grandmother was my inspiration. She loved to crochet baby things - mostly booties and hats. I like to crochet anything, but baby things and doilies are my favorite. I have done embroidery, but never learned to knit.
ReplyDeleteThis book looks great!
I'm a long time knitter but I've stuck my toe in the crochet pond a few times and this blanket is going to push me right in! I love this blanket! I'm going to brush up on my crochet right now!
ReplyDeleteI started crocheting as a child, embroidered & cross-stitched as a young adult and learned to knit as an adult. Now I mostly knit & crochet. I would love to win this book. Love your designs too, Kristin. Thanks for all you do for the knitting world!!
ReplyDeletegriffinknits@ravelry
Stunning blanket! I am working on (crochet) a blanket sort of like that - but not nearly as cool! The pinwheels - love!
ReplyDeleteI knit - and have picked up crochet (thinking it would help me use up leftovers - ha!) and also am a beginning quilter.
I've been crocheting for ages, am a just-past-beginner knitter, and I haven't embroidered at all but I've always wanted to give it a try :)

Knit, Crochet, and Embroider. Not often all three are combined into one project....but, hmmmmm. Maybe I should work on that! :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm mainly a knitter but also crochet but you inspire me to go beyond and add my own little touches to my projects!
ReplyDeleteI'm in love. It's the first crochet that I've seen that I actually like! I'm more of a knitter, but this inspires me.
ReplyDeleteI do all three, but probably crochet the least. Those booties are adorable!
ReplyDeleteSo far just a knitter but my mother managed to teach me how to chain so I could probably learn to crochet..Linda's blanket makes it very tempting..thinking about a class since I have this left handedness situation! I have hand quilted but never embellished a sweater with embroidery..another item for the life list!
ReplyDeleteI grew up crocheting potholders, afghans, hats, and table cloths. Now, I am primarily a knitter. However, I crochet market bags and for Christmas I embroider handkerchiefs for family members with copies of drawings my daughter did in elementary school.
ReplyDeleteI love both, but barely get to either. I may be reached at cellobean@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteI do all but I'm best at crochet and needlepoint -- knitting not so much.
ReplyDeleteI crochet constantly -- usually afghans. I'll never live long enough to do all the wonderful designs and patterns there are.
I'm primarily a knitter, although I have crocheted small projects in the past. I do occasional embroidery as an embellishment, although the designs never turn out quite as I envision them.
ReplyDeleteI knit and crochet and embroider. I have tried all kinds of needlework. I have been very lucky to have many talented needlewomen in my family to pass along their knowledge to me. This book looks great. I love the blanket.
ReplyDeleteI knit and have just started to crochet!
ReplyDeleteAt one point I have done all of those things. I prefer to knit at the moment and I have not embroidered in quite a while. I have never done any of those things in a combo. I would love to learn more about embroidering on knitting though.
ReplyDeleteCurrently I primarily knit but would love to dabble in crochet and embroidiery. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteLove this book! Such super-cute projects!
ReplyDeleteI knit & crochet :)

I do all three and sometimes on the same project. I just finished a crochet baby blanket with embroidered palm trees and the new baby's initials. I matched the blanket with a knit hat and sweater with attached crocheted roses. I used to make crocheted granny square blankets and this one looks fabulous.
ReplyDeleteI crochet all the time! I know how to knit, but it's not something I do well, so I don't have as much fun with it. Plus, who has time to knit with all the great crochet patterns out there? :)
ReplyDeleteI crochet and embroider, and I'm always excited to see great crochet patterns... This book looks perfect!

Knitter with basic crochet skills here. Love Linda's tips on changing colors in crochet.
ReplyDeleteI do all three, but mostly I think of myself as a knitter. Knitting is what I do every day. I do crochet projects from time to time, as I get inspired. I do embroidery infrequently because I don't have the patience for it and don't enjoy it as much. I wish I did!
ReplyDeleteBut I'd love to make that blanket. It's beautiful. Please enter me in the drawing!

hello from Shell~
ReplyDelete~ beautiful blanket ~
The Julia yarn colors are superb !
I learned to knit, crochet, embroider & needlepoint as a child. I haven't made any type of blanket since I was hired at age 11 to crochet a KING sized bed afghan in red, white & blue giant squares !! I had a meltdown when I realized I had to crochet them all together. The Mix & Match blanket may change my aversion to blankets ! Its artsy, creative & terrific colors. Perhaps I'll make a wee doll one first ! I still enjoy embroidery & needlepoint, but knitting is my passion. I'm excited to see Linda's new crochet designs. My challenge this year is to knit paisley patterns. I have been embroidering my knitting thanks to your inspiring books Kristin ! ~
thanks for the giveaway.

I mostly knit, which I learned from my mom. But I did teach myself to crochet and enjoy it just as much. I also embroider, one of my favorite classes I ever took was on Brazilian embroidery, really really fun!
ReplyDeleteThis blanket is completely gorgeous, I have been on the lookout for a great blanket to work on as my Hubs and I are planning to add a third and last child to the family pretty soon. I think that this book is a must have for cute kids stuff and I'll be making that blanket for sure!

I started crafting by embroidering on pillowcases when I was 12. I can still see the little deer I worked on. When I would stay at my grandma's she would give me yarn and a crochet hook and I would see how long a chain I could make. Now I'm a knitter and spinner. But there always seems to be some type of yarn and needles in my hands. smile..
ReplyDeleteI knit. I have tried to crochet, but for some reason I always have trouble counting my stitches, so I get frustrated. Embroidery counts as sewing in my book: something to be avoided as much as possible!
ReplyDeleteI knit, embroider & am beginning to crochet, with a little help from Linda.

I am a knitter. I have some sort of weird mental block about learning to crochet. I'm so lame. But maybe I'd be able to learn with this book.
ReplyDeleteI was a crocheter--having learned in Brazil in my teens to make doilies by copying an already done one. Previously I had done needlepoint and crewel embroidery. I became a quilter in the last ten years, but also learned to knit. I always wanted to learn to knit socks. Everyone discouraged me--so I just picked up a book and learned on my own. This book looks great, and I am a recent grandmother of twin boys. Hope I win!

I grew up with a mother and grandmother that did all three. I started embroidering as a small child and still have some of those "beautiful" works. :-) I have knit since an early teenager and still enjoy it immensely. I can do enough crocheting to make a single or double crochet edging on something (with verbal help from my sister!)and keep thinking I should/could learn more. I love granny squares. This book and yarn would be the much needed motivation to do so. :-)

ReplyDeleteHi Kristin,
ReplyDeleteI'd like to say I am knitter who crochets but since I made my wedding gown by crocheting it I think I have to say I am a crocheter that knits. Actually I teach knitting every Thursday night from 6:30-8:30 around my dining room table. I also embroider and cross stitch. The worse part of being bystitchual is that I when I'm doing one I am anxiously awaiting the opportunity to do the other. That is why I often combine the two: maybe a bodice of crochet with a knit skirt for my grandbaby daughters: 2,4,5! Oh the joy!!!
I do all three! I used to consider myself mainly a knitter, but I crochet too much now to say that.
ReplyDeleteThanks for such a generous giveaway!

ReplyDeleteHello Kristin!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Aria Westbrook and I was hoping to enter in order to possibly win the Linda Perman book and yarn samples.
In response to your question....
My grandmothers on both sides taught me how to make simple single crochet dishrags and upon finding that I was pregnant with my first child, I began teaching myself. I considered it an homage to these wonderful women who got me started. After about 3 years of practice, I'm loving how quickly I've been able to tackle new crochet challenges. :-)
I mostly am a knitter but I didn't start knitting until I was in my late teens. I learned to crochet as a child, mostly little drawstring bags and dolly blankets, then granny squares. I also embroider, quilt, smock and have dabbled in counted cross-stitch and hardanger!
ReplyDeleteI love to crochet but have trouble finding patterns I like. I really am intrigued with the baby blanket from Little Crochet and would love to make it!

All of the above! My 'Oma' from Holland would come for an extended stay when I was a little girl, and despite the language barrier, she taught me how to knit and crochet. I'm also a somewhat burnt out cross stitcher...

I knit most of the time with occasional forays into crochet and embroidery. Most of my crochet work of later has been with cotton which is unforgiving to the hands. But maybe your Julia yarn is a reason to crochet again. I do have a brand new great niece who could use a colorful blankie.
ReplyDeleteI do 'em all. I am more skilled at knitting than crochet, though. My last project was a combination of knitting and embroidery. I bought some sock yarn in Alaska with the name"Denali Autumn." I made a pair of St. st. socks and then embroidered the heels with leaves swirling up the legs. Great fun and I get a lot of copliments, too. Thanks for the giveaway. The book will be great for making grandbaby things and I haven't used Julia yarn. (yet) auntiddaknits@yahoo.com

I have done all three, but now primarily crochet. My grandma taught me how to embroider, and learned how to knit through 4-H when I was 10. I have only been crocheting for about 8 years but am a much better at crochet than knitting. Love the book and the Julia yarn; the colors are gorgeous.

ReplyDeleteThis book has some cute designs I'd love to try. I knit and crochet, but I haven't embroidered much since I was a kid.

I knit and embroider and one of my 2011 goals is to learn crochet! Cpmigda@aol.com
ReplyDeleteI do all three, but these days mainly knit. I'd like to combine them, since I tend to do them individually.
ReplyDeleteLove the yarn for the blanket. Usually I want to tweak patterns but I think this one's spot on!
Thanks for featuring the book. I haven't seen it locally.
I do all 3, although I could use some practice on my embroidery skills.
ReplyDeleteI can do all, but prefer to Knit. I really like the blanket and think it would be fun. I have always wanted to make a granny square blanket and I think that would be a great choice.

I do embroidery, knitt and dabbler in crochet! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI'm mainly a knitter, but I have lots of cross stitch on the side lines. I have a crocheted blanket in the queue, though it will be a first in a while crochet project.

I mainly knit - crochet feels more natural to me but I haven't figured out how to shape anything but a circle! My grandma was a tatter and crocheter, my mom was a knitter and cross-stitcher. I love both but prefer the drape of knitted fabric for garments. The book is beeyouteeful!
ReplyDeleteI am mainly a crocheter who also knits. What a great give away.
