It is Valentine's Day and so I thought I should do something for all of you who are still reading here. I've got a great chance to win the brand new Vogue Knitting Ultimate Knitting Book.
This is the third edition of this "must have" book for serious or not so serious knitters. It's amazing to think that the fine folks at Soho have published this book in three different versions. But then when I think about it - what knitters knit and are interested in changes so much over the years. Who better to update such information than the women who work at the top of the industry. Remarkable too to know that it has sold more than 1,000,000 copies in its different versions! WOW. That is a book that is in a lot of knitter's libraries.
This new edition of the Vogue Knitting Ultimate Knitting Book includes beautifully illustrated how-to illustrations with complete and clear instructions on how to tackle each technique - and there are hundreds of them. It is a fantastic resource for sure.
The Vogue Knitting Ultimate Knitting Book is split up into different sections like in the past and covers anything a new or experienced knitter might have a question about.
The sections I found interesting - because they are new to the book and more representative of what knitters are making now are:
Lace
Designing Sweaters - including how to measure yourself to knit to fit
Directional Knitting - for those of you want to knit every which way - FUN!
Accessory Designing - how to design hats, mittens, gloves, etc.
Shawl Knitting - to follow the trend that seems to not stop

What a lovely give-away - thank you for the opportunity. Right now I want to knit ALL the things! I'm not that experienced, but am working on Sigla - an Icelandic sweater in LettiLopi and loving it. I want to design some socks and a hat...have been toying with ideas in my head and must get out the graph paper.

I've been knitting for a little over 10 years and still have so much to learn. Knitting is my current obsession. I've thought on and off about learning to spin, but I haven't had the opportunity to take any classes yet. Maybe that's an omen. I do want to master Brioche knitting. I tried once but failed miserably. There are so many cute patterns out there now I'm really itching to try again. Thanks for the terrific giveaway! Savannagal on Rav.
ReplyDeleteI love doing Fair Isle because of the color and pattern changes although I do simple garments with it (scarves, hats). I'm about to attempt a simple cardigan but I'm a slow knitter so this could take a while. I'd like to learn about lace knitting to see if I could actually do it.

I am slowly learning more about commercial embroidery technique and time-saving devices. I just got back from the hardware store with a heat gun (to help shrink some loops in embroidery designs--this only works with polyester thread--don't try it on cotton!).
ReplyDeleteWow, thanks. I still like knitting socks. There are so many patterns and you can always make up your own stitch combinations, besides all the great yarns available. The off-kilter shawls pique my interest. Have not tried them.

Brioche! I'm signed up for a beginner course (in person) with Andrea Mowry in March. Hoping the instructions stick and I am able to easily pick up this new technique. Thank you for the giveaway, Kristin. This looks like a must have for any knitters library.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to have the Vogue knitting book. I'm really ADD about my knitting right now. Is it the winter doldrums? I finished a baby sweater and a winter hat for myself, then I frogged a half finished shawl and a half finished sock because I think the two finger weight skeins will be lovely in Justyna Lorkowska's new "Dancing Palms" shawl (which I just downloaded). But I also want to start a sweater. So until I can settle down, I cross stitch.

ReplyDeleteI just saw Amy Herzog at WEBS and so I am interested in getting measured and making a "custom fit" sweater. I was also recently trying to make a two colored cowl with ribbing so that it would be close fit and also with short row shaping so that the color changes were in waves. I tried and tried and gave up on it. Maybe the book would have helped me figure out short row shaping in rib? nohomama on rav
I am currently in love with making lace shawls....love trying new fiber combo to see how they drape! I am still playing with embroidery on self stamped fabric and knitting! I am hoping to do some more tiles as well. What is peaking my interst....knitting to fit you, choosing the right style, length etc

My favorite thing to knit is lace, but I’ve been pushing myself lately and doing two-colored cables, where the cable is a different color than the background yarn. Cables are not my strong suit, so this is a challenge. :) Thank you for the opportunity to win such a useful book!

I've have this book on my wish list! Right now I'm finishing some socks for my husband who wanted navy! Ugh. Ready to have them finished. Also, I've been swatching for my first sweater. I chose the Churchmouse cardigan. Having a challenge getting gauge! One of my favorite techniques is felting. Needing a new pair of slippers at the moment so may have to cast on for a pair. Love the Frenchpress pattern. I have knit umpteen pair over the years for myself as well as for gifts.

ReplyDeleteThank you for making the new Vogue knitting book a give away. It would be so helpful to me right now. I am teaching myself fair isle knitting. I want to be able to knit pieces like the item under the first photo in todays post under the book. It think I have seen it in one of your books. Recently I have started knitting again after many years. It occupies most of my free time. Right now I am knitting what is probably called stranded knitting where I am copying things where I can find a graph making a scarf, My Favorite Things, from Ravelry.
The more complex designs are too difficult right now. I get lost trying to count spaces, etc. Also I am afraid to start a sweater as it seems daunting. But my goal is a fair isle sweater. I have a pattern in mind with a fair isle yoke. Your blogs are so fun each time. I live in the Adirondack Mountains, recently retired and finally have time to enjog reading news and blogs in the morning and knitting in the evenings by the fire. The Vogue Knitting book would be a lovely additional to my days.

ReplyDeleteI have many knitting and craft books and I treasure them all. I take them out and read them and leaf through them frequently. This one I do not have. Right now I am making a garment (pullover) after following the Mason Dixon website and also watching the Fruity Knitting podcast/You Tube I have been reinvigorated to take the time to knit a garment after many handwarmers, hats, cowls, and shawls. Thanks to you, Kristin, and the many other truly creative people whose enthusiasm and encouragement and knowledge spurs the rest of us to keep striving to use our drive to be "makers". nurnanc @ rav.

It's so much fun seeing the colors coming together! I appreciate YouTube but still love a reference book at hand. I'm also a quilter, card maker, love embroidery! Always enjoy your blog. My theory is that life has become so complicated lately, I want my knitting to be simple, soothing, satisfying.

What a nice give-a-way! Currently, I am wrapping up a scarf. It's from your pattern, Otto. I haven't been spending as much time knitting these days, but I am thinking about starting another brioche scarf for my honey. Also, I signed up for a several advance double knitting workshops at the Yarnover, the Minnesota Knitters Guild one day event that takes place in April. Hi Kristin, looks like a wonderful book to be sure. 50+ years of knitting and still learning new techniques. Who ever though I'd be knitting only half a mitten and only the tops of socks? (Teenage neighbor girls). I love making (and wearing shawls) and if I can add beads to something that's a plus. So many fabulous ideas and patterns floating around these days and always willing to learn more!

Would love the opportunity to win the book. I always have socks on a long needle for mindless knitting in doctors offices, waiting in line, etc. I'm really into lace (at least looking at it); just can't decide which pattern to start with and also want to learn how to do brioche stitch.

ReplyDeleteI have been a knitter my whole life, mainly sweaters for myself, my kids, friends' babies, and an occasional scarf for a friend. In the past year, I've added rigid heddle weaving to my craft favorites. I can use my stash and much more quickly than knitting make gifts and usable projects from my loom. I am so excited to be attending an advanced rigid heddle class this weekend at Webs!

ReplyDeleteI just picked up colorwork with Caitlin Hunter’s Kodikas. I was feeling the need for more color so I made Ysolda’s Saudade hat. Love it. Finally I just picked up Marlisle by Anna Maltz. I think I see a theme here...! Really I just want to learn how to do it better. Holding the yarn is still awkward and my joins leave something to be desired, but the color keeps talking to me so I’m forging ahead. :-)
