I'm a "circular" knitter. Don't know about you, but I love working in the round, with the right side facing me. Double pointed needles or circulars - love them both. I know there are knitters who love the circular or "in the round" thing and those who love the back and forth. But let's not discuss that right now. Let's talk about a brilliant new book...... Knitting From The Center Out by Daniel Yuhas.
I've been so wanting to share it with all of you in case you missed it. I do not know the author personally but I like how his knitting mind works. All the projects are worked from the center out - or down - or whatever.

For me, Daniel designed a "sunflower shawl". Just joking but you all know about the sunflower madness around here if you are a longtime reader.
There's lots of very good "meat" and instructional chatter in this book. As far as I am concerned - that makes a book! And keeps it in my library for reference later.
Some great tutorials..... with straight forward directions and photos. Just what you expect from a Melanie Falick/STC Book.....
And some kooky, fun beginner stuff you can make.... quickly and easily.
Very nice artwork, chapter openers, photos. The book seems to have a "Pacific Northwest Hipster" vibe but these projects will work for any age. Trust me --- they are timeless and ageless. I only wish there was some multi-color knitting but perhaps that would be overkill. A girl has got to wish. This book is a keeper! See more photos here on the STC website.

Thanks for this giveaway. I prefer circular knitting with circulars. I've never used double pointed needles, having learned to sock knit only with circulars--two at a time. My repertoire is limited to sock knitting only so far!
ReplyDeleteOh WOW, that book looks amazing!!! I'm definitely a circular knitter, I'll always choose circular over flat if I have the choice. And I really love circular needles even for flat knitting. I try to avoid dpns because I've never quite gotten comfortable holding them - I use a circular needle and magic loop for small diameter circular knitting!

I love using circular needles for any project but socks, someday I might learn magic loop. I have a set of Denise needles that i love, but i also have some knitpiks, and several sets from long ago, that aren't interchangable that were my grandmothers from the 20's

I prefer circular needles, but usually knit back and forth on them. I prefer double points for things like socks and hats. For circular needles, I like both Addis and Knit Picks. My favorite dp needles are Signatures.

Apparently I have no strong opinions on this! I don't have a preference for flat vs in-the-round; it really depends on the project. Same with the needles: I often use circs to knit flat, as I'm currently doing with a baby blanket (Knit Picks options). I also use circs in the round - either one circ or two (but I don't really like the magic loop), but I also use DPNs, as with a hat I'm working on. I'm also using a pair of wooden straights for a scarf - so I'm all over the map on this one!

I prefer circular needles - knitting in the round and magic loop. Even knit my dishcloths on my circs. I started purchasing the Addi turbos in the beginning and have kept adding to them. Have too many of them now to get the click sets.

ReplyDeleteI prefer to knit in the round since I am a smoother knitter than purler. And I love the Chiaogoo circulars. Nicely point tips, smooth joins, the size/manufacturer name is printed onto the needle and the fact that the cable is red seems so decadent.
I prefer circular needles. I have a fairly complete collection of 40" Addi Turbos I use for everything, but I have recently discovered Hiya Hiya circulars and I AM IN LOVE. They are so comfortable to use. I knit back and forth or in the round as needed but always on circulars. I use magic loop so I don't need multiple sizes, I'm not fond of shorter circs as the needle part is often short. Circs also travel better than straights or double points which is important as my knitting goes everywhere with me.

I definitely prefer circular knitting, on dpns if the object is too small for a regular circular. No magic loop or 2 circs for me. My favorite needles are the HiyaHiya bamboo. I love the soft, warm feel of the bamboo and hate the "clickety-click" you get when knitting with metal needles. The HiyaHiya are pointier than others I've tried, making them better for lace knitting.

I love to knit in the round on circular needles, in fact I guess I just like circs because I usually use them even when I knit back and forth. I love the Addi turbos, but the yarn really determines what kind I use.

I love knitting in the round on circulars, knitting socks in the round on Dpns. I will knit flat as well especially if I want the seams for stability in a garment. The one thing I do not like is knitting with the super long circulars, magic loop, there is no magic in the loop for me.

ReplyDeleteI'm a DPN / circulars Grrl whenever possible. If I go to circs, usually I use Denise interchangeables. I knit tight, and tge larger Denise cable helps me push stitches up to the left needle tip.

ReplyDeleteCIRCULARS all the way!! And the DOUBLE-POINTS when needed... I prefer the ability to push the Work off the Needle and NOT have to worry about IT "slipping-off"... Not to mention, easier on the hands instead of those long "pig-stickers"!
I'm not really particular about any "Brands", so long as They're "METAL", I'm good! -- I kinda like the colourful BOYE ones, although I find Their tips to be rather longish on the CIRCS. However, most of the ones I do have are DECADES OLD Hand-Me-Downs from Mom! And, Yard-Sale-Thrift-Store FINDS! - My fav DBL-PTS are 4 Purple 5mm ones that I got at the SALLY-ANN for less than a Dollar!
I prefer knitting in the round because I have slightly different tension in my knit and purl rows. I love addi turbo circular needles, and use them for both circular and back and forth knitting.

I think I like circular knitting a little bit more but that may just be because I am not the best at seams! I like my knitpicks needles because they are really pointy and a nice bendy cord.(sarahland on ravelry)

ReplyDeleteMy favorite needles are the expensive circular Signitures. I resisted buying them for yeats but once I knit with them I was hooked, good tools male for easy knitting. I also love Chiagoo circulars for their nonkinking cables.
ReplyDeleteI love to knit in circles - with one circular, two circulars, or with dpns. I'm completely (and often more) comfortable using dpns on small projects like socks or mittens. And knitting with two colors (fair isle and other color work) is much easier in the round as the tension stays consistent.

Thank you for the give-away! It seems I prefer knitting in the round, because I've gravitated toward projects knitted in the round for the past few years. I like both DPNs and circulars as long as they are bamboo. My favorite brand for circulars is CiaoGoo.

I am a newbie, since June so I hope my opinion counts? I love circulars and my new favorite is ChiaoGoo, Stainless Steel rather pointed needle tips. For double pointed needles my ultimate favs is Susan Bates. They are coated with something special so the yarn doesn't slip around! Yeah!!!

I knit with circulars all the time, even when I am forced to knit back and forth. I knit socks a lot and knit both on 2 circulars. Always have 2 or 3 pr on the needles. I convert any patterns that I can so I can knit the garment in a circular fashion.

I use circular needles for large back and forth knitting to take up less space in public and to avoid cat help with swattin at te longer needles. For scks, hats, mitts, I use double point, I am a bit old fashion. I like the bamboo needles in all cases, nice an smooth to the touch and glide very easily. WOW...the book looks great! Now as for my knitting, I was taught back in the dark ages of my childhood (age6) on straight metal needles that i borrowed from my Great-Aunt who was teaching me. Used them for many years. However, now my needle of choice is Addi Lace Circular for everything. I have investigated Signature needles and really like them but they are very pricey & I just can justify that at this time in my life. I mostly knit sweaters, lace shawls & hats so the circular needles allows me to knit BOTH sleeves or BOTH the front & back of a sweater at the same time as well as the large number of stitches for a good size shawl. Plus it is much easier to knit w/beads on a circular than straight needle. I do use dbl points when knitting hats as I don;t like the circular when the decreases get you down to such a few stitches. So in the end it is circular needles in the round and back & fort plus some dbl points as well.

I'm an equal opportunity knitter using circulars until it's easier to work in double points. BUT I will admit to loving double points the best. Yes, they slow me down, but this is as close to circus juggling as I'm going to get. Besides I have a pairs in all sorts of materials as I can't resist the darn things.

ReplyDeleteAny project that I can adapt to circular needles, I do. Addi Turbo's are my needle of choice but if my yarn is too slick I use Clover Bamboo circulars. I have way too many $$$ invested in the Addi's and have requested that my sons give them to a grateful knitter and not just toss them when I pass on.

I prefer knitting in the round for stranded colorwork and socks, gloves, and hats, but still like flat knitting for tailored sweaters and jackets. Double points for small-diameter pieces (including collars other than shawl-collars), circulars for wider diameters in the round and for flat knitting. (Although I can still handle straight needles when I have to). As far as material - high-speed slick metal, all the way.

I prefer circular knitting on circular needles. I'm not averse to knitting on straights though. I like ChiaGoo Lace and Addi Lace needles. Signature needles are nice too, but way too spendy for me.

ReplyDeleteI knit circularly whenever possible; I hate seaming. I also do all my back & forth knitting on circulars. Mostly I use Addi Turbos and Denise Interchangeables, but I've recently begun trying some other brands, as well.
I think I prefer circular knitting, but only because I dislike seaming. And definitely on circular needles. I have some ChiaoGoo needles that I really like working with--which is good, since I'm working with them right now to make a Tomten Jacket. It's not circular, but still modular, and there's a minimum of seaming. I'm jenandstuff on Ravelry.
ReplyDeleteCircular all the way! I love my Dyakcraft needles, I think I have one of the original interchangeable sets they made in Vermont Rosewood. Recently I bought 2 sets of Karbonz circular in sizes smaller than the Dyakcraft needles and I love them almost as much.

I had my first experience with dpns about a month ago. I'd been afraid of them for years, but after a couple of hilarious hours, I got the hang of it. lol.

I almost always use circular needles and double pointed needles. I have quite a collection including ones with the metal cable but what I love using are nickel plated, sharp point, and a soft cable, mostly KnitPicks. I do end up buying double pointed needles more then I should because they like to get lost when I am knitting socks. Looks like a fun book and a great resource. ReplyDeleteI bought a set of Addi Clicks and they are great! So usually I prefer circulars. But sometimes I'd rather have wooden dpns, if it's a very small project and magic loop would be too fiddly. I find a use for all my needles and can hardly bear to part with any of them, including the long straight ones! :)

ReplyDeleteLet me start by saying that I have only 2 pair of straight needles, the rest all went to the church tag sale a couple of years ago. I have 2 full sets of KnitPicks interchangeables and a total of about 35-40 fixed circular needles consisting of Boye, Addi, Clover and my favorites, some vintage Susan Bates all nylon needles - extruded so in once piece (no joins!!!) and beautiful points!

I love circulars and dpn's. I started making Icelandic sweaters and that was that. Then I discovered that working on circulars is better for flat pieces by keeping the weight centered across the middle. I have every type of material except carbon. I prefer wood or bamboo but sometimes I need something moe slippery.

Beautiful book! I only knit on circulars. Addi Turbo are the best for lace but I have a collection of Knitpicks bamboo. I love the colors on wood. My goal is to have rosewood interchangeable one day.

Definitely in the round. Circular needles, either Addi Lace if I'm magic looping, or Lantern Moon if I'm not. (But I do own DPNs, and will use them as needed, if it's something that I started on a circ and it's gotten too small.)
ReplyDeleteFor the most part I use Knit Picks circular needles. Double points for the small parts. I have done a few shawls from the center out and really enjoyed the process.
ReplyDeleteI'm a newish knitter...so far I prefer DPNs..and I've always preferred wooden hooks/needles...but I am using a some Knitter's Pride Karbonz at the moment and loving them..I haven't done much back and forth knitting...but in crochet, I do prefer circular or crocheting in the round..

What a neat looking book. I would love a copy. I knit circular as much as possible and even when I have to work back and forth I use circular needles to do it. When I first began knitting I made tubular scarves where I just knit and knit in a circle for foot after foot. It was very meditative and a wonderful way to get comfortable with knitting.

ReplyDeleteI actually prefer dpns for my knitting in the round - its usually small diameter things like socks or mittens, but for all other knitting, I am circulars all the way! I find it easier to stow my knitting when they are on circs, and straight needles strain my wrists after a while. I am a fan of Knitpicks needles, I can't resist the pretty rainbow wooden ones they have! I use their interchangeables, so I can switch from their nickel plated or wooden varieties as my knitting demands. I haven't tried their acrylic ones yet. ~crystalrita@gmail.com
Circular needles I love for both circular knitting and back and forth. ChiaoGoo is my preferred brand. I just noticed the side banner with knitting for 4 footed friends, how gorgeous, when I close this I am clicking over not sure my cats would appreciate handknits????
ReplyDeleteI like circular needles and DPN's. I prefer Chiagoo red lace circs, or Signature circs for something really special. For DPN's, I like Knitpicks Harmony's.

I prefer Addi circular needles. Circular needles saved my knitting skills. Straight needles cause my arthritic hands to hurt. Now everything I knit, exept for occasinal DPs, is done on circular needles. In fact, I don't know where my straight needles are stored..

I love the circulars. For everything. Crystal Palace are my very favorites. When knitting in the round I just use two. And knitting in the round is my favorite way to knit. Cast on a rug last night, joined it. Then tink. lol

I prefer knitting with circular needles for both circular and back-and-forth knitting. I find it easier on my hands and wrists, and I like the way the knitting lies in my lap. I like circular and back-and-forth knitting: no preference. I often use two circs over dpn's, and I really dislike the magic loop method. Finally, I like to have an assortment of needle brands, but I use KnitPicks Harmony interchangeables the most. Love your blog and seeing stories about farm life and your creative use of color in your knitting and decorating. Thanks for taking the time to share with us!

ReplyDeleteHonestly, I believe I'm pretty obsessed with knitting of all types; I like knitting with dpns or circulars, just depends on the project size sometimes which I choose.
I do prefer takumi clover bamboo for most work, with natural yarn fibers. I have a collection of vintage needles made of casein with the great colors of mint green, salmon pink and creamy yellow and also those of steel, (very heavy) dpns, aluminum and other wood needles. Takumi Bamboos are my most used knitting needles, in straight or circular, and those I always recommend for knitting students, children or adults.
Bamboos are light and produce less static.

Addi circulars for everything! They're easier on my aging hands and wrists. I prefer back and forth knitting, though I'll knit in the round if that's what it takes to make the project. That book has me salivating over the projects. What an interesting idea for something other than sunflowers! And yes, I've knit other than sunflowers in the round! Sbsford(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteI love knitting in the round and go to great lengths to avoid seams. I love the interchangeables made in India such as Knitters Pride, and Hiya Hiya for fixed points, especially in the smaller sizes. Love DPNs and Magic loop knitting too. I knit fingers of gloves all at the same time, with the Magic loop!

I prefer to use circular knitting whenever I can; I don't like sewing up seams. I mostly use circular needles-Addi Turbo and Hiyahiya interchangeables. For socks, I have been experimenting with Magic loop. Depending on the sock pattern I like either magic loop or dpns; have decided that using 2 circulars for socks is too tangly.
ReplyDeletewhen knitting I almost always use circular needles and knit in the round if possible. I sometimes alter the pattern to do this. If the project is small I use double pointed needles( socks). If larger I use the circular needle (hats & sweaters.

I love circulars, even though sometimes I knit back and forth on them. I have a set of Addi Clicks, a retirement gift!, and love them. When I use double points I use the metal ones as I tend to bend them break the wood ones.

I don't really have a preference between circular and back-and-forth knitting, but I do have a (maybe somewhat odd) preference for DPNs when I'm knitting small things in the round and circulars when I'm knitting back and forth. I'm not really a fan of long straights. I don't have a favourite brand.

Thanks, Kristin, for the fun sheep photos and for the opportunity to win what certainly appears to be a great book. I learned to knit on straight needles, but when I took a "sweaters-in-the-round" class, I of course learned to use circs and have never looked back. I can use DP's, but very seldom have need and prefer circs for both circular and back-and-forth knitting. I like Clover for regular projects and Addi lace for lacy projects. Hope spring comes soon!

But then knitting in the round is more fun at the end (fewer seams). I like back and forth for stripes which are a passion.
I do all I can with circulars. (Fewer things to drop out of my hands.) But wood or metal depends on the yarn.

I use circulars for everything but especially like knitting in the round. It's fast and I don't like to purl. I just mastered magic loop for gloves. I never got the hang of double pointed needles but now I don't have to.
