Peony Season

Peonies have got to be one of my favorite flowers. I love the fact that a peony bed can last a hundred years in the same place without dividing. When we first moved to our farmhouse, I indulged myself in several different peony plants that I found at Walker Farm in Dummerston, VT. They have been reliably blooming and delighting me every June. With the hot weather this year, they are blooming a little earlier than normal.

The storm knocked down lots of the blooms but I was able to gather an armful to put on the kitchen table.....

On the window sill above the sink....

I love the sink and faucet I picked out many years ago. My kitchen window opens wide and I can watch the chickens pick around their pen and catch a lamb or two walking by in the pasture beyond.

Ahhhhhh.... I think I can smell them! I just love them too and I don't even mind the little ants they seem to bring in.

How pretty. They remind me of my grandma's garden.

My peonies are doing well this year also. We put wire supports around them that really can't be seen but help them to stay a little more upright after a storm. And I love your sink! We're planning a kitchen remodel for the fall and I'm on the hunt for an apron front sink. Love them!

Beautiful! Mine have yet to bloom. I've had them a couple years but moved them about a year ago. Then I forgot I moved them and ran over them with the lawn mower. Oops! At least I get to enjoy yours!

I can actually smell these peonies! They are my very very favorite and possibly the thing I miss most about the East coast. No can do so well here in the Bay Area...at least not like my mother's peonies, which in my memory were as big as dinner plates!

We are currently having our peony festival locally. Years ago an area farm had acres upon acres of peonie blooming at this time of year.

Bowlful of white with pink centres on my kitchen table right now. DH hates that they flop over after a storm, but I like them that way!

for me, peonies are forever inextricably linked to memories of grandmothers.
my great-grandmother grew them around her home. my grandmother had them on the farm and my mother had them in our garden.
generations of women growing, tending, loving this hardy beauty of a plant.
