October is such a busy month in New England. The roads are full of license plates from other states, restaurants are busy, and all the locals are getting ready for the upcoming cold. There are so many gardeners and farmers in this area. Porches are groaning with pumpkins and cornstalks, scarecrows are popping up all over. My kitchen table is full of veggies that I picked up at the last of the Northfield and Bernardston Farmers Markets along with the end of the garden crop. I'll save them and keep dipping into my stash as the winter progresses. I can't wait to eat some of those ugly Gilfeather turnips grown by Coyote Hill Farm. There is nothing like them. I hope I can save a couple for Thanksgiving!
I have one little bouquet of sunflowers from the Sunflower Field that is lingering on the kitchen table. The field has been frosted a few times and the rain and wind has pretty much knocked all the plants down.
It's about time to retire my flower clippers. There are still some stray blossoms around and as long as they are blooming, I'll keep cutting.
I've had these clippers for years - a gift from my mom. They work beautifully - the thin piece of metal attached at the top of the blade holds the flower in the clippers so they don't fall all over into the dirt. You can carry a basket on one arm and drop the flowers into it all at the same time. I haven't seen scissors like this in a long time. I wonder if they make them anymore. I'm all about production cutting when I am out there so anything that makes it easier......
Did you know there is a new knitting magazine? It is called Knitting Today and it is available at newstands now. Check out their website here. There is a lovely feature article about my "Get Stitched on the Farm" Classes written by Diane Broncaccio, a local writer who attended my August Flower Class.
And now to the Giveaway. You're going to love this one.
One winner will receive:
1. A copy of the new Ohio Knitting Mills Book, written by Stephen Tatar, courtesy of Artisan Books. This book is full of vintage inspired knits. You can read a good book review on it over at Susan B. Anderson's blog.
2. The premier issue of Knitting Today.
3. A copy of Knitting Green, courtesy of Interweave Knits. This is a beautiful book written by Ann Budd. It has many, many amazing projects in it and several essays, including one I wrote about raising sheep.
4. Three incredible skeins of yarn from my friend Gail Callahan, The Kangaroo Dyer. Each skein has almost 400 yards of yarn. The darker blue is 100% merino and the other two skeins are silk/wool blends. These are so beautifully dyed.
Do you know Gail's new book Hand Dyeing Yarn and Fleece? It is great and getting rave reviews including on Clara Parkes' Knitters Review! I wrote about it here on the blog. You can order it on Gail's website directly from her. (She'll make more money that way! I'm always out to help a fellow author!)
As usual, there's a question you need to answer in the comments section. Also, please leave an easy way to get a hold of you. U.S. Addresses only. Thanks.
Question: As fall rolls around, most knitters and crocheters start making plans for holiday gifting. My question is: Do you knit or crochet gifts for the holidays and if you do, what are you planning to make this year? Who will be the lucky recipient?
CONTEST ENDS AT NOON ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 22nd. I'll pick a winner and notify you by e-mail. Good luck everyone!

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 224 of 224I'm on the 4th of 5 earflap dragon hats for my 5 grandsons. I've taken Born to Knits's Dragon hat pattern and plugged it into an earflap hat pattern. Think they will be loved. I'm also going to knit a child's sweater for my cousin's little boy... then I'd better do one for his sister as well... should have enough time... right?

I love fall. We have made a trip to the NC mountains for the past 3 years and it always coincides with SAFF in Asheville. I have only a special few people that I will gift my knitting too...those people who understand the time and effort that it takes to make certain things. I gifted my first knitted shawl to a very dear and important person to me last year, and knew it was the right choice. As I tell people, there is a love in every stitch of the items I give to people. PS-I just love your blog!!!! I am lorettajphillips@yahoo.com
Definitely knit at least one thing for a family member each year for the holidays. This year it will be a sweater for my daughter. Some years I seem to pick a theme, although not always a knitting theme. Last year everyone got a sewn chicken. The year before a lot of people got socks and a couple of people got lap quilts. Thanks for another great give-away opportunity! Nancy Pinn ncpinn@gmail.com
I'm getting back into knitting (used to knit in high school) because I just crave the company of wool and love the work of knitting. My four year old son will be the lucky recipient of a knitted sweater this Christmas. I'm almost done with a pair of socks and a hat for him also.......:))

I love to knit the tiny sweaterss from Last Min Knitted Gifts (the 1st) for tree trim parties b/c they're cute and use bits of leftover sock yarn. Every year I swear I will start a tree skirt (Holiday Knits back in the '00s), and this eludes me again this year. My family don't quite get the knitting thing, although I found some gorgeous Blue S Alpaca to pair with a foundling hank in the stash for a hat for mom. And, I have a goal of Rowan's Brea sweater for me by Xmas + somethign from Foxfire Fibers yarn CSA. Hmm. We'll see!
I am way behind this year and I'm not sure that I'll get to much holiday knitting other than some hats for the kids. I'm also hoping to knit them each a pair or two of socks, but we'll see what happens!

I just started a new job so not as many gifts as before. I few stuffed animals for the kids and If I have time socks for my mother and mother in law.
I will be making socks this year for my friend this Christmas. Also I am "attemping" a sweater for my husband.

I do not make very many gifts for the holidays. I do this for birthdays more or just as a surprise, since it spreads things out over the year. My husband might get a pair of slipper socks from your newest book.
I'm knitting horses to add to my children's collections. I'd also like to finish two of the vests I'm working on.
Every year my family looks forward to finding out what I have knit for them. I knit for everyone from my mother on down to my grandchildren. Some gifts are sent to Germany where my son & his future bride live. Depending on who the gift is for, I will knit anything from scarves, hats & mittens to sweaters and afghans.

I have three pairs of socks and a shrug on the needles for Holiday gifts. I'm down to the sleeves on the sweater for my spouse. Whew!
I don't have a set plan for knitting gifts. This summer and fall I've knitted several items for my aunt, who is going through chemo, including a Flower Basket shawl and several hats. For the holidays, I'm working on finishing a Seascape Stole for my mom using Malabrigo Sock in a lovely green blue.
I knit for pleasure and relaxation. Giving myself deadlines for knitted Christmas gifts would make it stressful. Having said that, I have knitted Christmas gifts and probably will again, but just occasionally, and only a few.
What a fabulous giveaway. Thank you, and I hope I win!

Hi, I totally forgot to answer the QUESTION. Sometimes I do knit gifts at holiday time. Last year I made a washcloth to go with a bar of soap for a friend. I haven't decided yet if I will this year, I guess I need to be deciding. I have thought about a pair of socks for my son and husband. Thank you.

I always make presents for X-mas. and as usual as the weather gets cooler I feel like I am behind and can't possible finish before the holidays.
my kids and I have always made our presents to exchange. When they were young and money was tight we didn't have a choice. Over the years it has become a tradition that helped us keep the commercialism that spoils the X-mas spirit out of our holiday. It has also been a lot of fun making our presents. So even though we now can afford to exchange 'bought' presents we still produce little labors of love. And instead of buying me jewelry my not so crafty husband always make a donation to Second Harvest in my name.
I always knit hats for my boys but this year I have a niece! So...I'm knitting her a sweater (my first). I'm also hoping to finish a christmas stocking for my son...my aunt made me one from a kit 30+ years ago and I found the pattern on ebay!!
Planning to knit Christmas ornaments as gift toppers for each of gift recipients. Also hoping to finally knit stocking for myself and my husband!
I like to knit and crochet both, but right now I have hit a crochet spert in my life. I am planning to crochet a few beanies, several pairs of socks, and some how this week when we went to the yarn store my daughter talked me into buying yarn to make her dog a sweater and her a purse to carry him in. So I have a lot to do not to mention the snow flake ordiments I want to make. So I am busy and the yarns sure could come in handy!
I almost never knit gifts ... I've had too many folks react like "what you're too cheap to buy me somethin'?" so now I buy gifts and with a few exceptions (mostly chldren) only make stuff for people who value it enough to pay for it ... and get that hand knitting a pair of socks is not a way to save money :).
Since we now have young children in the family again I've taken up knitting toys! It's great fun and I hope will provide joy to the recepients.

After years of knitting and sewing gifts, I am going to take a year off and make other things...full time work just won't allow it.
