5 Year Blogiversary May Giveaway! Deadline May 31st, 2011

I'm in a bit of a knitting funk...... How bout you? The weather should be warm, the garden should be planted, but the rain hampered everything. My garden is crying out for attention, not to mention the sunflower field that is underwater and who knows when will be dry enough to plant. It just seems that this time of year, I'd much rather be outside that chained to some needles. I suppose in the hotter parts of the U.S. where you have to spend the summers inside in air conditioning, knitting production for some of you may increase?  At any rate, I do what needs to be done and fit in the rest of the stuff around it.

Last year at this time, we were just beginning our studio renovation project! Boy am I glad that isn't happening this year. It's great to be able to use the porch every meal and look out upon the lambs and chickens doing what they do. Looking forward to the first "Getting Stitched on the Farm" Class at the end of July. Full class - very exciting! I still have five spots left in the Sept 10-11 class and one space available for the Oct 1-2. Check it out here.

I'm a couple of months into my 5th year of blogging. When I thought about this back in March, I asked some good friends of mine for some gifts for all of you to help promote them also. I was so overwhelmed by the generosity and ran many giveaways. But then I tired of it because I felt so many people who entered were just there for the chance of winning some yarn or books. I decided to hold back some of the prizes for later so that I would be able to offer them to all of you who stick around month in and month out. And these prizes are GREAT!

I've got today's giveaway and a second one coming up in June. Here's what we have for you today! Courtesy of Kathy Elkins (Co-Owner and Podcaster extraordinaire) and the fine folks at Webs in nearby Northampton, my next winner will receive 13 skeins of their Valley Yarns Superwash DK in a lovely basil color.

Along with the yarn, the next winner will receive matching circular and straight needles to knit this gorgeous yarn with and a handy dandy Webs tape measure.

From my friends at Sixth and Spring who publish beautiful knitting books (they are the publisher of my latest book Color By Kristin) I'm thrilled to include some of their newest, highly sought after titles including
1. Knitopedia, a book that was at least 5 years in the making. It is a must for every knitter's shelf.
2. Rosemary Drysdale's Entrelac. This book is so popular that it went immediately back to print. I got to see some of the samples from it when I was at Webs one afternoon when Rosemary was teaching. What you can learn to knit from it is amazing!
3. Susan Levin's ColorSense. This book is a great tool for all of you who feel color challenged.

And lastly, I've got some of my Best Foot Forward self-striping sock yarn donated by the fine folks at Westminster Fibers, producers of the yarn. You'll get 5 different balls of yarn - each ball will make 1 pair of adult socks! Wow.

Here's how you enter. Answer the following question and leave the answer in the Comments section of this blog?

Does your knitting, crocheting or crafting increase or decrease in the summer months? What craft or hobby do you like to do best during the summer?

U.S. Addresses only and PLEASE leave an easy way to get a hold of you
Contest ends Midnight of May 31st. Good luck everyone!

Happy 5th -- and hoping for many more! Our family vacations at a house in the woods on a pond on Cape Cod-- no TV, no microwave -- just a hammock, dock with canoe, and peaceful days -- so I always take a big knitting project with me so I have something to do while watching the kids in the water or at the beach. Just the project type changes -- something more intricate and smaller -- not huge swathes of stockinette. Wishing you peaceful days.

My knitting tends to stay the same through out the year. I always like having something on the needles. Although in summer I may go with smaller, lighter projects.

Happy fifth year blogiversary!
I knit a lot of socks, so Summer or Winter that doesn't change. big projects I might knit less in the Summer... afghans and sweaters for instance.
But the longer lighter days actually encourage my crafts pursuits in spite of the heat!

I knit less in the summer because my girls are all out of school. I tend to spend more time reading and crafting with the girls - a lot of those beads you put into a shape and iron, they just can't get enough of those!

I knit about the same amount, but I knit differently. Nothing that sits on my lap, and nothing that can't go in the washing machine -- so small stuff, sturdy fibers. We go to several folk festivals, where it is always dusty or muddy (and sometimes both, when the weather changes midway through). Socks, mittens, and hats, and sometimes afghan squares.

What lovely giveaways! (Should I chance to win, and if this doesn't sound picky, I, um, already own the books. . .)

Just found this wonderful blog. I'm a beginning knitter and hope to get some kniiting done this summer for Christmas presents. I like to get out on our atvs in the summer but since we have to drive I can always knit in the truck on the way. Don't know how much we'll get out this summer since the snow just isn't melting anytime soon!

I tend to knit more in the summer; work outside in the morning, hide in the AC during the afternoon and work outside until chased in by the squiters. Here in Central Indiana, the heat index and humidity can push upwards of 95 in the shade! Not fit for man nor beast. bonnieanne@omnicityusa.com

My knitting (and recent new love of crochet) continues in the summer. I just don't make large afghans or heavy items that will sit in my lap. It's also on the porch in my summer white rockers looking and listening to the birds.
Happy Blog Anniversary!

i actually increase the weaving that i do in the warmer months. this is because the "loom room" is actually at a temperature above freezing and if it gets too hot the windows come open and the fan comes out. i don't actually have a favorite craft; the world of fiber art is too...entincing to settle on just one aspect!

I feel like my knitting life has been nonexistent since returning to work fulltime. I am promising myself more "creating" time this summer- the days are longer & I want to spend time after dinner knitting on the front porch or on the patio...a treat for surviving the long winter & wet spring. Kristin you know I love your blog- I hope to someday make it to a "getting stitched on the farm" class...

Happy 5th! I love being able to knit uninterrupted on car trips. It's amazing how much I can accomplish in a couple of hours. The summer means being outside in the garden but once it gets to miserable with heat and humidity knitting is my choice year around.

I have enjoyed keeping up with your blog for maybe 4 years and love the sheep pictures.

This time of year is working in the yard. Getting the flower beds is better shape. But we will see how that goes.........my knitting is less.

Happy anniversary, Kristin. Your blog remains one of my very favorites! My knitting tends to go down just a bit in the summer because I spend so much more time out in the garden and sit less. This summer, though, I'm hoping to keep the needles busy. I've also got more big sewing projects to finish, so perhaps my garden will be mildly neglected!

I'm still knitting in the summer, generally smaller projects. We have a wonderful wrap-around porch on our log home; after supper & watering the flowers, me & my knitting can be found in the rocker overlooking the creek.

Hey Kristen! Just found your fun blog. Enjoyed hearing about your colorful farm!

I knit just as much in the summer . . . but tend to work on smaller projects like socks or shawls. If it gets too hot, I use frozen grain bags on my lap or behind my back to cool things down.

When I was in school, my knitting and crocheting increased in summer because I finally had time. Now I knit and crochet more in fall (in anticipation of Christmas gifts). Lately I've been looking for quick and satisfying craft projects because I get very impatient in summer. I always want to be outside.

Hi Kristen!
My knitting increases in the summer. I know that the fall is such a busy time (my oldest child will be applying to colleges this fall!) so the summer is my chance to get some things done. I like small things -- mittens, socks and cowls --- that I can put away as holiday gifts.

Actually, my knitting increases in the summer. I am out at parks or at the beach and I keep something in my bag to work on as I walk, visit, relax and chat.

I like knitting socks in the summer a lot, but currently I'm starting a sweater in wool/silk -- it feels lighter than pure wool to handle, but it should be a nice warm sweater.

Love your sock yarn so so much!

Thanks so much for this lovely giveaway, and happy Anniversary! I think if I were your winner, all of my holiday shopping would be complete, for all of my g-friends are knitters too. This winter, because I was a 'reverse snowbird', moving to Idaho for three months, I knitted everything I could find! And once I returned to the beach in sunny socal, my knitting came grinding to a halt. No need for hats, mittens, socks (Yes, I even learned to knit socks this winter), scarves, mufflers....I guess that answers that question!! Thanks again!

suedriskozago said...

I find that I'm knitting less although I'll be traveling soon so my knitting production might actually improve. I'm currently for lil kid friendly crafts that can be done outside.

Leslie said...

During the summer I tend to knit just as much, but it's socks, mittens and hat - in other words small stuff. Of course, we won't talk about the sweater I just started for the husband this week. At least it's a chunky wool/silk blend (Cascade Venezia) so it will go fast and feel nice in my fingers -- if it's too warm though there is a pair of socks in the little tote to keep me occupied when the tv is on.

Five years already? Time flies! Julie was only a wee sprite then.

If by some lucky chance I should win you should be able to write to me from my comment... Here's hoping cuz that's awfully nice sock yarn.

Mimi F said...

Less knitting in summer as I tend to be outside longer: gardening, playing with dogs (2 weimaraners). Before you know it it's time for bed and no time for knitting. Caveats: during french open and wimbledon when there is ample TV time. I would love to win the sock yarn!

I knit about the same amount, probably because I tend to knit while watching movies in the evening. I live in a temperate climate, not blazing hot or humid, nor does it freeze, so that might have something to do with it as well.

It does a bit. I don't want to big afgan on my lap when it is 85 out. I don't have AC so it usually small projects.

Like you my crafting tends to slow down in the summer. We have a 60 acre farm in Western Mass, have some sheep (not as many as you do!), board horses, and have a huge garden. We put up about 8,000 bales of hay, so if the sun is shining we're pretty busy. I'll knit a bit, especially if we're in the car. I also like to sew and quilt. Sometimes I'm just so thankful for those rainy days! You can reach me at hopsoncm@hotmail.com! Love your blog!

My knitting decreases because my children are out of school. I carry my project bag in the car during my "bus driver" duties to soccer, museums and zoos but it doesn't get opened as much as I would like. I do read about projects and get lots of great color ideas at museums and at the beach...so I dream about knitting more in the summer and actually KNIT more in the winter.

I live in a warm place (okay, it was 103 horrible horrible degrees today and there's no AC in my car and I had to work and drive between two malls today and it sucked radiator water.... but I digress) and we've just started using the swamp cooler 24/7. My knitting increases in the summer, but it's not due to the AC thing. It's because my job (usually! Pardon me while I kick my job in the shins again) slows down to 20ish hours a week and I have more time to play. This year the joke's on me, my two week check will have 102 hours on it next payday.

As nice as the extra moola is. I'd rather be knitting and spending time with husband.

~ hi Kristin,

Your sock yarn is scrumptious !!!
What a lovely give-away.
Sheep & Pink Petal carpet was great fun to see. Will those be made into postcards ?
I believe I knit just as much in Summer as any other time. Also, I teach knitting to children in the school year, so the Summer is my research time to design or try new projects I think they may enjoy.
I am a "Knitter O'million Projects on The Needles" so there is always something to finish. I do garden & increase my bike riding, but in Summer I loVe to sit on my outdoor swing seat, read or best of all Knit, or read knitting books. Even though I live in a small city, the yard is most wonderful. I push myself to finish other tasks so I can have my relax time of the swing seat & yarn.
~ I really try to enjoy that every day, its my Knit-Therapy ~
My Mom knitted a giant hammock when I was a child, using thinner clothesline twine. I would love to knit such a large, fun project !!
... maybe this Summer !

Oh Yes...my fiber arts(all of them)decrease in the summer months...almost to a complete halt. I use this time to think about ideas, colors, thoughts about what I want to try..something a bit different than before. I LOVE to do my fiber art like a 3 season porch..I sit with it 3/4 of the year! But then I am really ready to get back to it and it is SO comforting! It makes the colder Wisconsin months so wonderful! In the summer I work in the garden and walk outside as often as I can. I take mental images and sometimes photographic images of the beauty of spring and summer so I can use it in my art!

My knitting time may shorten a little but I only get about an hour a day anytime of year. I do get more if we are on the road or doing something that is conducive to more knitting time. What happens for me is the projects tend to be smaller or lighter in weight and fiber choice. I like to work on lace and small gifts in particular in the summer.
For the last four years I have stuck with knitting year round though I do have what is turning out to be a long term cross stitch project that see more daylight in the summer.
Thanks for this great contest.
God Bless our troops.

Well, Kristin, I wrote you a long message yesterday because your comment about people only caring about your give-aways inspired me to go back through your archives to try and figure out how long i have actually been reading your blog. Then, my true inexperience with the blogasphere caused me to unintentionally delete my appreciative comments. I did have a great time reading some of your older postings, the story of the cookbook you made of your Gram's recipes, the painting of Dr. MacGregor, and some adorable photos of Julia as a little girl wearing sweaters that I have admired in your books. As a Californian who keeps a special place in her heart for Western Massachusetts, I get some of my fix from your blog. I even visited your sunflower stand one year and had my husband take a picture of me holding some sunflowers that we bought to take to my daughter. So, this is a long-winded way of letting you know how much I enjoy your farm and fiber blog and your meanderings along the way. Thanks for sharing so much of your life with your readers.

As for knitting in the summer, I move to lighter weight yarns (still primarily wool), but I always have projects on the needles for my post-work day relaxation. By late summer I start fantasizing about my favorite season and indulge in some great fall colors. Thanks again for your creativity and your generosity.

Greatings from Europe and thank you for your wonderful pages!

In the summer, my free time is much more apt to be spent gardening--but I also travel a fair amount in the summer so I get extra knitting time as well. Because it's travel knitting, these projects tend to be either small and portable (socks! a shawl) or the early stages of something larger. I know a lot of people knit summery things in summery yarns like cotton but in general I find I knit the same things year round.

The cosmos in the foreground in the photo of your house are just superb! they look like a cosmos hedge...

To answer your question about summer crafting: I am always knitting or spinning something. I spend the same amount of time on my projects in the summer, but due to the heat, I switch from knitting sweaters to lace shawls or socks.

Kristin, congratulations on 5 years of your wonderful blog! I love your beautiful photography & informative stories! My needlework stays pretty constant throughout the year; I'm disabled & must craft in my hospital bed at home, so outdoor activities aren't competing with crafting activities! During the summer my favorite is knitting or crocheting with lightweight yarn & smaller items-trying to keep cool without air conditioning! Thanks for being so generous with your time & resources; your blog is always a delight.

In the summer, I tend to do smaller knit projects and cross stitch. I am one who enjoys doing afghans and that is not the best thing to do in the hot summers in Oklahoma. :)

My knitting usually diminishes in the summer but this season it may be different as I have 4 extra grandkids to think about come ChristmasTime! In lieu of knitting, I like to turn to painting with watercolors.

With temps currently in the 90s, any crafting with yarn takes a back burner.

This weekend I was crochetting small dog toys and even that was making me hot.

Right now I content myself with reading and planning out my fall/winter knit projects.

Congratulations on your 5 year anniversary.

I knit all year round without thinking of seasons.
Projects may vary, i.e. cotton vs wool etc.

Love your blog....

Happy Blog Anniversary! I realy enjoy your blog. Thanks also for the great giveaway. My knitting actually increases during the summer as I spend a lot of time traveling in a car and knit away :).

Knitting slows way down. I am bed earlier because I am outside all day. My arms are tender from gardening and knitting isn't fun. But I keep thinking about colors and combinations for that first frost! And then let the knitting begin...Jane L

my knitting decreases in the summer months. we have a swimming pool and lots of great days in the sun. We also have a garden to tend.

I love your blog. I wish I had found it earlier!
I probably knit less in the summer because it is hard to garden and knit at the same time! I am frantically trying to get the garden planted now that the rain has stopped. I did cast on socks this weekend so I have a project that is portable and ready to go. gnlmutti@gmail.com
