Summer Days and 15!

Summer is flying by, isn't it everyone? It always does but this year seems especially quick. I know it is getting close to over when Julia's birthday rolls around. Fifteen - how did that happen?

Summer birthdays are tough for kids because it is hard to get anyone to celebrate because friends and family are running here, there and everywhere. We decided that she could extend her birthday for a month and she is making plans to keep up the party.

One of our mama cats - Mitttens - had one kitten in June. This mama is rather wild and it was all we could do to corral the kitten and try to socialize it. The mama had a fit and when I wasn't quite paying attention, she took the kitten away - outside. And then she came back in that evening without the kitten. For 2 weeks she went outside and called for it. After a while she stopped calling. We figured the little kitty was a goner and then lo and behold, Julia discovered the kitten one day upstairs tucked away in a closet 3 weeks after it had gone missing. It was a miracle. So again, we have been trying to socialize it and this time - all people in the house are working on getting this kitten to be a lovely little pet. We named it Miracle or Mira for short although now we have changed it to Miro since we think she is a he. He is crazy about yarn, newspaper, and anything that moves. I think he is going to be a good hunter.

I think I have a home for it with a woman who wanted one of our kittens a couple years ago and couldn't take it because she had a sick dog. At any rate, we all are enjoying playing with Miro who has the largest double paws you could imagine. From Meg at CEY, I learned that "double pawed cats" are called polydactyls and were favorite cats of Ernest Heminway. Fascinating history to this abnormality.

Sadly, Julia's favorite cat Delilah the Calico has been gone for over a month now. We have made flyers, posted them all over town and sent them to our neighbors. Julia has been really upset about Delilah's disappearance and is now coming to grips with the fact that her kitty probably has succumbed to the wildlife around our farm. It is a beautiful place to live but we do have all kinds of wild things that prey on small animals. Our cats go in and out and that is one of the dangers. Delilah's mama Petunia is going to be having a litter any day and Julia is hoping for another calico (me too, I must admit much to The Farmer's dismay - he can't say much though considering he is feeding over 300 animals right now.

Hope you are all enjoying the lazy days of summer. Not much lazing here but oh well.

Julia, I am very sad to hear about the loss of Delilah. To have a beloved pet go missing is a very distressing experience, I know. I hope Petunia will celebrate your birthday by producing a calico kitten for you!

I am sorry too for the loss of your beloved cat. Losing a pet is never, ever easy.
Do have a wonderful month of celebrating your birthday even as your heart aches. That little kitten is darling and is certainly a miracle. Those eyes...so gorgeous!

Happy Birthday Julia! Party on!
My boys all have summer birthdays so I understand the party dilemma. We would plan "slip and slide" parties and it would rain, in sunny Colorado! Love the kitten.

What a sweet picture of Julia with the kitten. Happy Birthday to her!

Calico cats are so pretty. When I was a child, my family had a calico whom we named Princess.
