I have a passion for ethnic handmade fabrics whether they are woven, knit, embroidered or hand-dyed. When I was in college, I learned an intricate dye technique called Ikat Dyeing. For those not familiar with Ikat, the warp is wound for the loom and then the threads are dyed in a particular pattern. The warp is then used to dress the loom and the threads are woven into a beautiful fabric. It is rather painstaking, to say the least. After I dyed and wove a few pieces of ikat fabric, I realized the skill it takes to produce the incredible patterning of these fabrics.
Above is a photo from the Author Susan Meller's website and newish book Silk and Cotton (which I'm asking for as a birthday gift M & J!) of hand-dyed IKAT fabric on a loom. Isn't it incredible? If you have time and the interest, check out Susan's website full of gorgeous fabrics. There are some beautiful hand-dyed and woven ikat fabrics here.
When Regia asked me to design another collection of colors for sock yarn, we began with the idea of ikat fabric. Although this sock yarn is spun and dyed in a factory, it has the shifted, mottled look of ikat. There are 6 colors in this line and you can see them knit into socks below.
Here is a photo of how the yarn looks in a ball. As you knit, an ikat inspired pattern will appear on your knit fabric. How very cool. Below you can see the 6 colors without the balls bands. I have included the names and numbers too in case you would like to order them.
Check your local yarn store for the new colors. They have been shipping in the US since August.
To celebrate the world-wide launch of these 6 new shades, I am hosting a giveaway. SIX lucky readers will win 2 skeins of the new Kristin Nicholas Design Line - enough yarn for a pair of socks.
Here's how to enter the contest....

Well, my grandson is growing -- and quickly outgrowing Grandma's handknits!! Winter is coming, and we can't have that, so I'll be knitting a bit for him and trying to finish a few things of my own but we all know that I'll cast on the next thing that strikes my fancy...
Thanks for a great contest!

Besides the numerous pairs of "Jelly Bean Baby Socks" for friends grand-babies soon to arrive, I want to make beautiful socks for my immediate family. I've never made a pair, but have become inspired by the baby socks I'm knitting. This patterned yarn is gorgeous!

I've recently been losing weight and need a handknit sweater to wear - something that fits!! Plus, I can ALWAYS use new socks!
I am knitting a cardigan raglan sweater from the pattern on an old sweater wheel. My mom and Grandma both used one and I was lucky enough to inherit both. I always have socks going and can't resist patterned yarns like your new ones, Kristin. And it is time to tackle at least a few UFO's. I am fortunate to be home where I can knit all day and night!
I have a WIP from 2008 that's a Marie Walling design that will be finished by Jan, come hell or high water! And a pair of scoks for my new husband -- who has size 13 feet, I'd like to add! I love the new colorways, esp Persian Carpet! Great job! thanks for the chance to win. AllisonInPhilly on Ravelry
After a marathon of knitting fleece-lined mittens for the past month, I'm ready to cast on for my first Orenburg shawl. This is my spinning and knitting Grail. There are still Christmas presents to be finished: one ear-flap hat,one shrug, three more pairs of socks, but I hope to keep up steady progress on the Orenburg. There's a Leicester Longwool (endangered breed) lamb's fleece all scoured and ready to be combed and spun into lace-weight yarn. What are the odds?
Thanks for a contest, Kristin!
I am crocheting a rug from fabrics strips, and I have several WIP and a few Christmas projects

Thank you for the contest. I can't wait to see these yarns in person at my LYS.
Like many others I will be knitting some socks. My teenage grandsons actually love hand knit socks. They like to skateboard, and they claim the hand knit socks give them more control of the board.
I will also knit or crochet something for myself- haven't decided what it will be.

All these colorways look beautiful! Regarding projects, I've been back and forth on this subject so this is a good opportunity to make up my mind. I think I will... (long pause)...(dithering)...(throwing darts at the mental dartboard of potential knits)...make spiral scarves for the little girls for Christmas. There, now I said it!
well, i'm always crafting something but you know i'm making your holiday stockings for my cousin. just started #4 of 6 (the 6th will be a sock monkey inspired stocking). after i'm done knitting them, i'll do the embroidery. would post them on facebook as they progress but my cousin is one of my FB friends.....maybe on ravelry???

This is the year I dive deeper into stranded work and trying to knit two-handed. Even though the Regia skeins are pre-dyed I think the Persian Carpet colorway would make a stunning pair of mitts. I would wear them and be inspired!
Well done, Kirsten. You continue to color the world.
I really need to finish the stuff I've started. Oh, and find a new job!
Those yarns are absolutely lovely - I'm especially fond of the Autumn Harvest and Smiling Pansy colorways. As for the fall, first I have three samples to finish knitting and then I plan to knit some nice warm sweater jackets for myself!
My plans are to finish several wips in the next month and a half and then start on some Christmas gift knitting. Your yarn looks wonderful!

It's time for me to plan my holiday knitting. The who and what usually take me a bit to get figured out. In the meantime, I'm working on a beautiful shawl just for me. I didn't have any plans other than use up some stash - and of course, Christmas knitting! Beautiful yarn, Kristin!
Most of my crafting will be knitting. A tight budget means home made gifts--socks for my SIL (he is so sock worthy!) and hats or lace scarves for friends. My grand daughters will get some clothes and toys...(sewn, since i sew too!) As always my list of things to do is far greater than the time available!
I have some wips to complete: two shawls and a large cowl. I'm also going to venture into sock knitting-- with a class on two at a time toe-up on a single needle. Before you know it, I'll be ready to try out your lovely new yarn!

I am about to start a sweater that is intended as a Christmas gift, so I'd better get going. I also want to finish a wool blanket that is about halfway done. But I ALWAYS need a pair of easy socks to work at the office or on the go, and self-patterning yarns are perfect for those. My son loves handknit socks and he's always outgrowing them. I think some Kristin Nicholas Regia yarn is in my future, whether or not I win it here!

I'm always knitting. I just started a test knit short-sleeved sweater this morning and the first clue of Susanna IC's beaded shawl MKAL comes out tomorrow. I'm waiting on a yarn shipment to begin a blanket for a little 5 year old boy at our church who has leukemia.
Also, I attend a polymer clay retreat at Mammoth Cave every October so that is coming up soon.
Thanks for the chance to win. Your new yarn looks like so much fun.
Fingerless mitts, socks, stitching tea towels and finishing a sweater! Your new Regia sock yarn will be perfect for my projects. I'm partial to Ikat - when first learning to weave mid-80s I dyed the warp to weave ikat. I still have the scarf I wove from cotton string. It was fun pulling the warp ends to create the ikat in the warp. Classic textiles evolve and I enjoy watching the process. Can't decide on Autumn Harvest or Persian Carpet. All will make great projects.
I am hoping to get a couple of winter hats finished for some new additions to our extended family and to knit myself a cowl. Other plans abound but with any luck I'll get the hats and cowl finished this fall. Beautiful colors in your yarns, love the idea of the ikat patterns. Deb

I have just moved to Nome Alaska! We have been here 9 days now. I shipped some of my WIPS to myself before I left and they just arrived a few days ago. All of my other stuff is on the barge coming in the 1st of Oct. Lord willing and the weather holds and the sea doesn't freeze. Nome has no yarn shops! Some red heart in the grocery stores. Have met some people and made inquiries to start a knitting group at the local coffee shop. Plenty of people craft but get their yarn from "outside." I hope to start the knitting group and begin teaching knitting this fall. In the Spring I intend to go out to the Tundra and pick up musk ox down. I am sure that I will be able to wear lots of hand knits this fall and winter. I hope to win some sock yarn, as I can never have too many pairs of socks for me or my husband.
I have half a skein of yarn waiting to become a hat; a number of knitted but not-yet-assembled Christmas ornaments; a linen stitch scarf that will see progress (but probably not completion any time soon!); hats and gloves to knit for charity... Hmm, that list is longer than my knitting speed can accommodate, so we'll see what actually gets finished!

I love Regia's colors and you did a nice job in your collaboration.
I am lagging behind in two mystery KALs right now and want to finish those before the snow flies.
I'm working on a large table runner for a friend. She needs it a specific size so am doing my very first design. It's been interesting & challenging. Also have a couple knit projects to finish.
Thank you for offering us a chance to win your beautiful yarn! I started a new position a couple of months ago. Having been warned that winter days can be very cold in the office, I have started to knit fingerless gloves for my new co-workers as holiday gifts. My husband and I no longer carpool to work so my knitting time has become more limited. It may take a couple of a years to complete gloves for everyone. Returned to making finger and hand puppets for the local hospital.

I have plans for a beaded lacy shawl and a alpaca sweater. Throw in some yarn bombing and that should take care of things for awhile!

I want to make a warm hat for Robin.
I am going to spin the yarn for my annual handspun, handknit sweater. I make one each winter.

I get a lot of yarn from a thrift shop where 2 lbs of unrelated yarns are shoved into a bag for a few $$. To get yarn I want, I often wind up with some fun fur/eyelash/glitter ribbon, etc. This year I'm rushing to make a bunch of boas and stoles, hoping to sell them in time for Halloween or New Years partiers to snazz up their outfits. Wish me luck.
I've been watching a lot of Korean television and one thing you see there is a lot of fabulous knitwear. This fall, I've been knitting cowls like crazy and I am also starting two larger projects - a Cranberry Capelet and an EZ pelerine - to keep my shoulders warm as well.
My plans are to work on some of my UFO's and work on an I Spy quilt for my Grandson. Thanks
Ooops I forgot my Ravelry ID. It is gussek Thanks

I am going to knit a three-color shawl that's been in my plans for over a year. It's mainly green and purple with a little orange, so it's definitely fall/halloween colors. I WILL finish it this fall.

Oh my, what aren't I working on! I enter several craft fairs in the fall so I am knitting, crocheting, felting and embroidering home and personal accessories that I design, plus making the same out of upcycled sweaters, clothing, doilies, buttons and other bits and bobs I find at thrift stores. Thanks for including us Canucks in your contests again. Love your Brimfield pics. Great colours for your new sock yarn...I'd love every one.

Beautiful yarn indeed! I plan to knit another shawl, socks, and several cowls. Rav id: KnittedinMaine
I am knitting almost entirely from stash right now, so this would be lovely. I am finishing a pair of socks as we speak--Helen Socks by Anne Hanson. I have a sweater's worth of Green Mt. Worsted weight for a sweater but can't make up my mind, and Christmas knitting.

What fun patterns! I'm working on a tiny Aran sweater. I love making sweaters for little people. And sewing, sewing, sewing. So much fabric - so many ideas - so little time.
I've always loved patterned sock yarn and the colour of the new lines makes my fingers itch to cast on ;-) I'll be starting my holiday knitting this week and it will be socks and cowls Christmas gifts this year.

I have been wanting to knit a few shawls and some cowls since the cold weather is coming upon us. Actually it has hit where I live. It was a surprise. But I have a number of gifts that I want to give to people since they have birthdays coming up as well. I love to knit the gifts because I want a more personal touch to the item.
I have a sweater vest for a friend that has been languishing in my bag for way too long and needs finishing. I am determined to get it done and give to her. I also have a girl's sweater that has also been in completed pieces for way too long, but not sewn together and blocked. I now have a little gal to give it to, so want to get that done, too.
Love the new yarns!

My knitting plans are to finish a pair of mittems from a KAL, and work on the second panel of a intarsia world map afghan.
I just finushed a baby sweater from sock yarn, and I think this yarn would wonderfully for that pattern. Thank you for the chance.

Although I enjoy knitting lace scarves and shawls, (especially if I can add beads to the mix) with an eye toward winter and Christmas I know I'll be knitting lots of clog slippers to felt.
I've knit socks using Regia yarn and with your lovely new color line it looks like I'll be knitting socks, also.
Thanks, Kristin, for your occasional give-aways; it's always fun to read the comments.

I am working on some Christmas gifts, in particular a sweater for my daughter and some socks and slippers for other members of my family. Some new sock yarn could help with those!!
My head is spinning with ideas from all the new fall patterns just being released. Top of the list: a light-weight cardigan to start off the transition to the cooler days. And socks of course. Always good to have socks on the needles. Thanks for the opportunity.

I want to get back to my rug hooking and I've fallen in love with knitting socks!
Well the weatherman is talking about this being a very cold fall- so I am feverishly working on making two fall colored cabled sweaters for my sister in law and brother. It is hard to find good men's sweater patterns- but I finally found one he likes on Rav... now, my son in law wants a Christmas sweater and he wears a 4x so I have to buy a bunch of yarn for that project. My mother, and two daughters and grandson, grand nieces (4 of them) will all get SOCKS! ... and there is something about knitting and watching football that makes me just love the fall, so I am all revved up to get it done! Thanks for the contest- I sure could use the beautiful yarn for the socks part of my projects!

I would love to win any of the yarn colors in the new sock line!
My big fall knitting project is a cardigan. The pattern is from the latest Twist Collective issue and I'm using Julia yarn in the color persimmon. It's very different to not be doing stranded knitting. It also very different to not be using purple!
I'm thinking about also starting a stranded sweater.

I love your vision and work!
I took a weaving class in June and am hoping to buy a Cricket Loom this fall. I want to use up my kitchen cotton stash and make dish clothes and towels.
My everyday knitting, at the moment, is a pair of socks that I lug to meetings. I tell my colleagues that even if we don't accomplish much, I'll have warm feet at the end of the semester.
Cheers,
Karen
My plans are to knit for my soon to be born grand daughter!
I will continue to knit and crochet baptism baby blankets and prayer shawls for the prayer shawl ministry group I started at my church. I have also crocheted a few doilies with red crochet thread. My hope is to graph and crochet a name doily for a Christmas gift. Baby hats for my local hospital are always on my needles. And of course, year 3 of our 'tree hugger' project downtown will be starting soon! I do need to get back to socks...it's been a long time!
