Chihuly in Boston at the MFA

One advantage of taking Julia to the doctor in Boston frequently is that sometimes we can fit in some shopping, eating, or visits to the great culture that is to be found in Boston. Last week, we went to the MFA to see the Chihuly Exhibit. That's my niece Olivia's glass orbs in front of the postcard below.

If you have the chance

to visit it this summer.....

Go! I loved the textile references.

It is spectacular!

Huge and over the top!

How do they do it? Can you imagine crating and shipping all this glass? It blows my mind. Absolutely fabulous. You can see some great videos about the making of the exhibit including how they built this green glass tower here on the MFA's website. Go! You won't be sorry.

Chihuly is AMAZING! I got to see an exhibit of his work in Charlotte, NC a number of years ago. How cool that you went! And, especially cool that Julia got to see it, too. Thanks so much for sharing!

Dale Chihuly is AWESOME!! We have not been to one of his shows but have watched several documentaries that have been made about him while working at his "workshop" in Seattle. It is so cool to watch him work with his helpers. What a treat to actually go and see his work. Thanks for sharing Kristin. :)

Y'know, I thought the green thing was a plant, like a yucca or something, in the first picture. Wow!

I live in Nashville and the exhibit was here in two places. At the Frist Museum and also outside at Cheekwood gardens. If you really wanted to see something spectacular you should have seen Chihuly lit up and also some of his pieces floating in water. Absolutly breathtaking.

I work at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and one of the first things I see as I come into work is the giant Chihuly "Sunburst" that hangs from the lobby ceiling. The MFA exhibition looks amazing - how lucky you were to go see it.

I discovered Chihuly at the Columbus Art Museum after TNNA one year and have been a fan ever since. In fact, last night I was at Borders and used my 50%off coupon on a Chihuly book. Saw the Pendelton peices at the Botanical Gardens in Phoneix a couple of years ago - as well as other peices scattered in the desert - fantastic - and held up against pretty strong winds. Maybe a trip to Boston is in order!

I saw the Chihuly exhibit twice while in Florida a few years ago and was blown away by his creativity.

I saw the Chihuly exhibit when it was in Michigan at the Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids. All that wonderful colorful glass was mixed in with plants and flowers and ponds...breathtaking and spectacular! And a huge inspiration!

Here's a Chihuly story you might like. I have a friend whose sister runs an art gallery in Chicago and who sells Chihuly pieces. My friend, Liz, once visited her sister and saw she had a beautiful Chihuly, a giant colored globe of some kind. She exclaimed. Her sister said, "There's an invisible flaw in the glass which makes this piece worthless. It's going to break one day. No one will buy it. You can have it." Unbelieving, my friend took home the Chihuly and put it in her front hall. It looked perfect. She had it for about 8 months, then one day she brushed against it, or shut the door a little too hard, and sure enough, it shattered into a million pieces.
