Wow, that takes me back. My grandma had numerous pockets that looked like this...the lovely checked fabric and all the little x's.
Your picture reminded me of a project we had in "Home Ec" class when I was little. We each made a little gingham apron and then embroidered cross stitches with the fabric as our guide. Some girls did a small patch, but I went all out and made a pattern the whole width of the apron.
