Kristin's November Giveaway - Beat the Grey Skies!

Tuesday's post has probably left you all thoroughly depressed. All those images of greys, tans, and browns certainly didn't brighten your day. They were beautiful in an odd way - moody and almost eery. Seeing them on the computer screen surely did make me feel chilly - just like it was when I was out hiking around for the photos.

But today, I've got some cheer for you - a lovely basket of brightly colored Julia Yarn sitting in the sun in the studio to brighten up your computer screen.

But wait, there's more. I'm going to take away all that grey November gloom. It's time for the biggest giveaway yet this fall. Here's what I've got for you all. I'm so excited - I wish I could enter!

1. From my friend Gail Callahan (aka The Kangaroo Dyer) an assortment of different colors of her very own hand-dyed yarn.

2. Again, from Gail, an autographed copy of her fabulous book Hand Dyeing Yarn and Fleece.

3. From me, a copy of Mary Jane Butters' MaryJane’s Ideabook, Cookbook, Lifebook - For the Farmgirl in All of Us
I love this book and I want to share it with one of you. You'll have a great time reading about Mary Jane's farm and how she lives her life in Idaho. It is jam-packed with so many great ideas.

4. From me, an autographed copy of my latest book Color by Kristin.
I love all my books but this one is probably my favorite so far. I was able to fit in pretty much everything I wanted to share with knitters. And the projects are so much fun.

5. From the fine folks at Nashua Handknits, 15 skeins of my soft and colorful JULIA Yarn. This will keep you busy all winter combined with my book Color by Kristin!

Here's what you have to do to enter.....

Answer the following question in the comments section of the blog. Are you ready? I've been working on it for 2 weeks.....

Question: If you could do anything in the next year, absolutely anything, what would you dream about doing? Forget about your job, your familial obligations, your house, your friends, and just do it for yourself? What is that dream?

Contest ends next next Thursday, November 18th at midnight. I can't wait to see what you come up with! Remember to leave an easy way to get a hold of you. Thanks everyone!

I would grow wings and fly over the ocean with the albatross. But in all reality, if I have to stay earth bound. I would stay home and use the time to rework my garden area...do all those things that you say, "if only I had the time." Then, once my year was up, I could still look out my window see what time and nature evolves...

I would travel throughout Ireland and Great Britain with my husband, learning to spin with him, and knitting lovely warm, bright sweaters, socks, scarves, hats, anything, from local yarns, while expecting my first child.
Oh, to dream.

Two things (and I'm not trying to brown nose...really!)

1) Travel to Ireland and at least 1 month.

2) Take a "Get Stitched" class on your wonderful farm.

Well, since I'd have nothing else to do, I'd gut my kitchen, extend it out back and build a roomy family room. This would open out onto the deck of my dreams. Come summer, I'd sit on that deck sipping iced tea and knit until the sun set. I think since I'd be so busy knitting, I'd have to hire a chef to cook in that state of the art kitchen.

Since it is a dream and can be absolutely anything...

I dream to have one more year with my lovely mother, she passed away in 2006 after more than a decade with Alzheimers and one more year with my brother, he passed away from cancer when we were kids.

I'd love for both of them to know my children and husband and have a blissful year of healthy, sweet, uninterrupted time together again as a family.

And while I'm dreaming, I'd like to add the discovery and cure for cancer during this year. So we all can have more years with our children.

That is my dream.

I would find a nice stretch of deserted beach with a small (but comfy) house - heck, a hut would do, and listen to the waves, the wind and the gulls. That would be a perfect year!

I can't even begin to explain how hard this is for me to answer. I'm 27 years old, and I take care of my disabled 66 year old mother alone. My boyfriend lives in California - we've been dating for 2 1/2 years. It's very hard for me to imagine forgetting about familial obligations. I'm from Appalachia, and it's very ingrained in me. I guess my dream would be to first know that my mom was somewhere safe and happy in order for me to feel like I could truly enjoy my own dream. I went to graduate school in the Midwest, and it was very hard for me. My dream would be to own a home near Snowshoe Resort in WV, spending time sleeping late and staying up late pursuing my favorite rejuvenating hobbies: knitting, yoga, and reading. In this dream, of course, the boyfriend will be able to be there, too. Who am I kidding, I would love for my mom to be there, too, but I would mostly just appreciate knowing that I have help and don't have to take care of her alone anymore.

You can reach me at SusanNMarshallATgmailDOTcom.

I would travel to every knitting workshop, camp or festival that strikes my fancy. I would take a friend along and we would laugh, knit, eat, drink & shop of course!

A year free of responsibilities.... ahh! As a full time teacher with one son in college and the second entering in September, I'd spend the year on me! I've always wanted to take the Master Gardener course, a full year commitment with daytime classes. I'm a compulsive gardener so this program would be a dream come true. And then there would be yoga... early morning classes and those in the evening. I'd be so relaxed, I would find time and peace to pick up some of those knitting patterns I keep putting aside for "later". I can't forget ballroom dancing classes with my marvelous husband. Romance, stiletto heels, and sexy dresses. Oh but if it could come true!

Oh this give away is too good to be true :0)
If I could, I would move to Idaho .... in a one room cabin, and have 5 sheep. I would like either a pond or lake, some form of water that I could look out my window and see :0) I would LOVE to spend my days gardening, tending my animals, and living off the land. I would love to spin and knit by the hearth ....
I have dreamed this for some time ... Thank You for allowing me to share it with you !!!
This is such a lovely give away ... I would be so tickled to win !!!
Thank You !!!!

If I could do anything in the next year, it would be to get back to my roots - to follow my true dreams. I used to speak French fluently. I used to paint. I used to cook. I gave up all of that to work in the business sector. For some reason, I felt I didn't have the time to do the things I love. I would love to get back to the things that mean the most to me - knitting, cooking, enjoying nature and speaking French.

Oh, this is such an easy question for me to answer. Without a doubt, I would start a small Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Goat farm. I have been researching them for years, and even went to a working farm Bed & Breakfast that features them, to learn more. The problem is, at this time, I don't have the resources or freedom to do it. But that is where my passion lies. Would do it in a heartbeat if I had the chance.

I was lucky enough once to deliberately take 3 months off of work. I didn't make a lot of plans. I spent more time with friends, swam laps or went to a yoga class most days, cooked, knitted, and things like that. It also was the first time that I can remember when I felt really, really well-rested. That makes every waking moment better. If I had a year, I'd do the same thing again and take some of that time to indulge little whims like learns to draw, have an even better garden and actually eat or can most or all of it, and things like that. I'd also plan a trip to Scandinavia to see a bunch of textile museums, including the Bohus museum.

My husband is a military history buff, so he would be thrilled to go as well! And I would get some British yarn, too! Goes without saying!!

I've really enjoyed reading some of the replies. Seems travel is a big dream for many. I traveled a lot in my youth, and still like the idea of being in another place, separated from the ongoing demands and expectations of life, but I no longer like the idea of the GOING and getting there. Sigh. So, I guess my dream would be spending time in that peaceful state of MIND and spirit, with just enough challenge to keep things interesting!

Hi Kristin
Love your blog and hope to see you at Vogue knitting live in January. Having one year off work to participate and complete the Nihon knitting school certifcation program would be a slice of heaven. I want my knitting to speak to me so that when i put my knitting down i dont have to rely on my marks etc. So I could look at my knitting and know exactly where I am up to.
To be able to design, graph, steek, knit different styles and be grounded in the basics is my one true wish. I recently attended Loani Priors wild tea cosy class and you learn some good basics in that course. Leaves you hungry for more.
Many thanks for this competition. Kerry in Sydney Australia

Spend the year being a sponge -- taking classes in color, drawing, design, spinning, animal care, photography, etc. Take all of your classes! Goals for the year: (1) challenge myself (2) face my fears (3) explore the realities of living on a farm raising sheep, alpaca and goats (4) learn so that I can share with others in a way that conveys excitement, support and encouragement and (5) find joy and contentment in every moment. Kristin, thank you for this opportunity to do some thinking about what I would love to do and then compare it to what I am doing. The real challenge is realizing I do not have to wait for a gift from a stranger to make any of this happen. I can do this! xoxo Nancy Pinn ncpinn@gmail.

What a question--so hard to answer especially because when I read the other comments, other people's dream years sound so compelling. But as for what I would really do with a year in a parallel universe: I would go serve an apprenticeship with a master cheesemaker--preferably on a sheep farm where knitting in my free time would be encouraged!
What a fun experiment--thank you for prompting us to indulge our colorful imaginations!

What a great question! Nothing like dreaming to chase the grey's out of your brain. I would spend a month on a walking tour of the English countryside. This is a profound question, Kristin! But I'm sure you knew that. It's difficult to unwrap all the constraints and attachments and obligations that condition knowing what that would be.

My guess is that I'd resign my jobs (day and freelance) b/c forgetting about my house means ignoring mortgage obligations. I'd start studying music and taking voice lessons again -- singing was a big part of my life until after college. Maybe it would turn into something to do professionally, maybe not, but I never gave it a chance.

I would live for a month or more on a farm with sheep raised for their wool. I would help care for them and learn to wash, card, and otherwise prepare their wool for spinning. I would spin mounds of fiber and no longer be a beginner spinner.

I miss him terribly and while his visits home are fun, they are not often enough.

And closer to home, if I had the chance, I'd finish up my jewelry certificate. I loved being in art school and feeding off the creativity of my classmates.

Your question is so easy to answer, I have been thinking about it for around a year now. Not surprisingly for the reader of a knitting blog, mostly I would do things that involve yarn: I would knit up and write patterns for all the designs rolling around in my head; I would make a dent in the list of projects-I'd-like-to-knit; I would make enough temari balls (Japanese embroidered thread balls) and lace wheels to have a sufficient inventory to sell; I would apply for admission to the local craft guild for said temari balls and lace wheels; I would read at least some of the books languishing on my shelf; I would lose 30 lbs; I would learn to spin, buy a loom and learn to weave, build a frame and learn to hook rugs; and I'm afraid I would need far more than one free year to accomplish these things... so I'd better just do the best I can to do them over time in all of the years to come!

First, I would take my husband away for a long European vacation. Just the two of us, spending time together with no plan at all. Of course there would have to be some sheep in there to satisfy all of my wooly desires.

Travel is, of course, tempting, but I would like some time to process some of the input of the last few years. I would spend 6 months at our rustic cabin, 10 miles south of the Canadian border. The other 6 I would spend in a condo in downtown Chicago with a panoramic view of Lake Michigan. Part of those six months would be a chance for frequent contact with the nieces and nephews plus siblings. My spinning wheels and loom would go to all places, as would the knitting. My sewing machine would get added to the chicago mix. All the notebooks from all the classes and seminars plus the get technique books would go, too. Guess I better hire a personal chef. The northern MN one will have to dehydrate everything!

I dream about taking a break, all alone, for a week or to. I'd just spend time reading, knitting, sleeping, and thinking. I could finish projects, plan new ones, and work on ones in progress.

There are lots of places I would like to do this, but more than the location it's the idea of being alone, away from home, with myself that I dream of.

Hi Kristin,
If I could do absolutely anything in the next year, without worrying about anyone or anything else, I would start the little farm that my partner and I talk and dream about. I would also start experimenting with dyes, because I love color, and then knitting and weaving with my color creations. And I would write about it all... the challenges, the successes, the heartaches, and the happiness. That's what I would do...
If I'm lucky enough to be your winner, you can reach me at spinster1780@yahoo.com. Thanks!

I would put a month long trip to Ireland at the top of the list. I visited there for a week in 2007 and it never leaves my dreams now. I think a month would let me get around to all the sections I missed. Would be great to meet up with some of the Irish knitters and bloggers I have followed on the internet.

I would travel all around Ireland visitng where my father-in-law was born and raised. In my travels I would look up all his relatives (my husband's aunts, uncles, cousins...) and experience life in a new way. As a knitter I would explore the whole process of Irish wool...beginning with the animals and ending with the purchase of more than enough yarn to knit my own designed Irish sweater. Of course I would take my Irish husband with me!!

If I wouldn't have to work for the next year, I would spend part of it traveling to places where I want to go, Ireland, Scotland, Northern Europe. The rest of my time, I would spend doing all the things at home that I don't have time to do right now---fixing up the house and all the projects that never get done.

Oh, I would love to travel across Europe, namely, Scottland, Ireland (where all of that great wool is), France and England and end up in a great yarn shop, buying lots of yarn and doing lots of knitting. Thanks for a great giveaway!!

I would travel the U.S. for 6 months with my husband, kids, and grandkids. Visiting historical sites, state parks, enjoying and learning. We would visit craft fairs, fiber festivals, etc. Collecting unique items for my dream store. Then, upon return home buy a cute old building for a creative store - Inspired - art, knitting, classes, coffee/tea, etc. And live in a small space above the store!

I would set up the biggest knitting event in history! "Knit for Peace". Each town in each city in each country, on each continent would create squares, with a peace sign, that the local knitters would make and then join together to form a long fabric. Then each country would meet another country's knitters at their borders and join together their long pieces to their own until there was one piece long enough to wrap around the world!

That's a great question... and an awesome prize. My answer would be to go to a bed and breakfast some place open and wild (no place in particular) and knit and hike and just be. Then I wouldn't have to cook or clean and I'd be able to sleep in or get some exercise.

And I agree with the group that likes grey days. :)

I would travel to Europe, and spend at least a month in paris, living like a Parisian. I'd knit every day, for as long as I wanted to, with no husband or kids or anyone to stop me. I'd go to art museums, and buy produce daily at the market, and just be.

Then I would finally learn how to ride a motorcycle - this is one of those things that I've tried (and failed) to do in the past.

Then I would want to take a cruise somewhere in the Carribean - take thousands of photographs of exotic things.

Then I'd like to go and work at a no kill animal shelter/sanctuary for the rest of my time, and read and knit during the downtime. Perhaps finally get started on those memoirs. :)

I would take classes! Tons, and tons of classes!
Through the years, I picked up little bits and pieces of all sorts of craft, from knitting to wood sculpting, from macramé to acquarelle, but I never had time to go out and learn from people more knowledgeable than I am.
I would also like to learn Russian, and brush up my Spanish, and I would like signing lessons, and of course Tango and salsa lessons.
And I would read, and read, and craft... and maybe, just maybe, I'd try to write a book, I always wanted to. And I'd take time to walk, to meditate, to just *breathe*. Like many (well, every) woman in this world, I run too much, and in the process I forgot to live...

I would take the time to write/test the patterns that are all in my head. Combine those patterns with a bit of spirituality and write the book that wants to pour out of my soul. I would travel to sheep laden parts of the world and try and understand the differences in all the sheep and why some wool is different than other wool. But, come June I would be at the Squam Art Workshops. A place that calls to me stronger than anything I have ever known. A retreat, surrounded by like minded, creative fiber folk.

That is what I would do.

Thank you so much for asking. It feel good to write that down and for someone outside of my head to read it!

I would study painting (watercolours). Having only tried it as an introduction over one weekend, by the end of it I was completely smitten. It was exhilarating. And bring out the quilts that I have started over a decade ago so that I could finish them! And knit. Pure heaven.

I was put on bed rest when I was pregnant with my twins. I spent 5 months in bed, from April until August. You would think that would be the perfect time to teach myself to knit, but I actually did it after the boys were born. I was in medical school then, and 6 months from graduating, I quit so I could stay at home with my boys. They’re 5 now, and they have a 1 1/2 year-old sister (thanks to 3 different Reproductive Endocrinologists and about $70k). I have spent the last 5 years trying to get pregnant and then caring for the results (and loving almost every minute of the latter). What would I do with the next year if I could do anything in the world? Go back to school and finish my dream of becoming a doctor. I want to get back to the grind, the academics, the thinking and the doing. What does this have to do with knitting and color? Well, a girl can’t study 24-7, can she?!

Kristin,
I just stumbled across your blog last Fri. I think I found you on Ravelry and then here. I can't get enough. I have made 2 of your free patterns and am working on the third. I also just ordered a book of yours.
I have a pretty good life with most of my dreams coming true everyday. So that is a hard question for me to answer. Maybe it would be a visit to your farm and learn about wool. How to dye it, spin it, raise sheep etc. I am a self taught knitter and can't learn enough. Oh yeah, or maybe be on The Amazing Race with my son.
You inspire me,
Susan

Funny that so many of the comments are about travel -- my dream is the opposite. First, I would take my husband away for a long European vacation. Just the two of us, spending time together with no plan at all. Then, I'd come home and buy a farm, with enough land to finally realize my dream of self sufficiency. And spend the rest of the year planning and growing anything our family would need. Of course there would have to be some sheep in there to satisfy all of my wooly desires.

Kristin,

Thanks for asking a thoughtful, dream-provoking question. I would love to move to a foreign country (preferably one whose language was different than mine and was located somewhere on the Mediterranean!) and both serve and learn from the native people. People, color, art...what could be better?

Jessie McKitrick said...

I can hardly believe how difficult it has been to answer this question. I've been thinking about it all week now, and only just now do I have an answer. At one time, I'm sure I would have easily answered it, but I think I've been busy enjoying life as it is (as imperfect as it is) rather than wishing for something else, which makes a nice change. While I would still love to travel, I think that if I could do anything next year, it would be to improve all the things I am doing already, from day-to-day tasks to creative ones. I would especially like to improve my knitting skills, and to work on design skills.

Ha! Maybe 10 years...

Wow--thought about this so long that I practically missed the deadline! It's helpful to reflect on how much of what I dream about is actually within my reach--I do have time to write, knit, etc.; I've been lucky to be able to travel a great deal, though not lately. But if I could really shrug off family and other obligations and do what I long to do right now . . .well, then, I'd probably move back to New York City and enter a PhD program in comparative literature. Maybe add an enrichment program at the nearby Jewish Theological Seminary, study poetry and sacred texts, and write and teach. Ahhhhh!

(and keep knitting, of course. great yarn stores in NYC.)

As I read all the comments, I realize what a nice question that was, as we should all think about what we REALLY want to be doing with our lives, and try to do it. It also makes me realize how very fortunate I am as I am already doing what I always wanted, which is living in London, traveling all over the world and knitting as I go, on planes, trains, ferries and buses. The only thing that would make it better is if my husband would retire and we could do longer trips, if my children lived nearby and were married and happy, and would make me some grandchildren to knit for. Hopefully all that will come, but no rush. I do love those yarns, and if it is a random lottery I hope I win it, but if it is based or merit or need, i shouldn't as I already have everything I really need. Thanks for the question, and the lovely photos, they do so remind me of happy days living in western Mass.

I don't know if I could totally forget about my family. Here goes:
I would travel by train, an old train, from New York across the country to the Rocky Mountains. Preferably, in an Idaho forest at the foot of a lovely, grand mountain in a little stone cottage. (I'm a backwoods girl). There I would have a kitchen garden, some sheep for wool, chickens and two goats. In the spring I'll sow seeds and plant bramble bushes; in the summer I'll harvest zucchini and corn; and in the fall I'll prepare the dyes from herbs to dye the wool from my sheep. After spinning the roving, it will be lovingly hand knitted into a shawl for my mother, just in time for her birthday. :)

I would spend the year travelling through the Lands of the Fair Isle knitting across Northern Europe. I’d journey the landscape of traditional 2 color knitting (and also spinning in natural fibers) across Scotland, out through the Islands and on to the countries of Scandinavia, sipping tea and eating scones the whole way. Fair Isle (the island) is described in Wikipedia as “famous for its bird observatory and a traditional style of knitting.” Delight! I’ve heard that on Shetland Island one only needs to drive along the country roads to see signs for Fiber Studios and hand spun yarns.
In the capitals of Scandinavia, I’d check into boarding houses or simple B&B and explore the knit cafes I’ve found on the internet. I’d end my year in Lapland (just a 1.5 hour air trip from Oslo) visiting a national park to see reindeer in their natural habitat . I would return home, satisfied, to sit on the couch and knit with insights to ponder and stories to tell.

I would buy a bunch of yarn and make things as I go and take a lot of pictures, and then I would write a book.
Fun to think about!!

I would love to travel around the world, starting in New Zealand and Australia, exploring the different yarns of each country and the techniques that go with them. I would take a lot of pictures and then I would write a book.
Wouldnt that be FUN!

What a wonderful opprotunity for thinking through one's life!

Time, a whole year.... for myself. I would really like to have time where I could sit down and relax at a spinning wheel or with some knitting or a good book, in front of a fire, far into the forests and far away from "civilization" - where there aren't to many city lights but where you can see the starry skies at night. Card wool, enjoy the process from wool to yarn to knitwear. Knit small things for charity to send to some place where it is really nededed (not just the regular feelgood poorkids charity but where an warm thing can really make a difference of life and death). And with a possibility to travel some, preferably with my family, to Canada, the USA and Australia, meet friends we haven't seen in a long time and for once feel that we have time off. A relaxing year, for me.

PS. I liked the swirly twirlies!

I would spend several months in Greece and then finally get all the work on my house finished. I've always worked and put things off, now I've retired I want to catch up.
