Kaffe Fassett Shots and Stripes Quilt Book + Giveaway

Let's begin with a little lamb photo - I know you can't get through your day without one!

Now onto the post at hand.....
For all you knitters out there, our talented friend Kaffe Fassett has a gorgeous new book out. It's not a knitting book but a quilting book. The premise behind Kaffe Fassett Shots and Stripes written with his longtime collaborator Liza Prior Lucy is that no print fabrics are used.

I love this collection of quilts. I love the way the pure color comes through - how the color and the pattern is making the quilts as opposed to many quilts which are more about the different fabrics being used.

If I were to make a quilt, it might be similar to one of those featured in this book - bold straight-on gorgeous color and pattern made by piecing cut up fabric shapes. Does the quilt above look familiar? To me it looks like a crochet or knit afghan done in one of those diagonal stitches. Gorgeous!

I'm not much of a quilter at this time in my life but I have made quilts in the past. When I was in high school, my friends and I made some quilts as fund-raising raffle projects. Mostly it was about sitting around together for hours talking around the huge quilting frame that was set up in my parents basement. What fun we had. Yes, I was a sewing and crafting nerd fanatic back then too.

The last quilt I made was shortly after we moved into our farmhouse. I have a friend who has a shirt making company and she used to save me all the silk scraps from her cutting table. I made the quilt from these brightly colored solid scraps of silk. I backed it with large stripes of silk too. Instead of typical quilting batting, I used a cozy cotton blanket as the stuffing. And I tied it with embroidery floss instead of quilting it. That's the kind of quilting I do now.

So onto Kaffe's new book... It is called Kaffe Fassett Shots and Stripes. This is the back cover. Isn't that a beautiful piece of textile design? All the intersecting colors and triangles. What a work of art.

In Kaffe Fassett Shots and Stripes, Kaffe includes photos of his inspiration and back-story on where the idea for the individual quilts came from. I love that - nice to read about how an artist gets their ideas. As with all of Kaffe's books - whether quilting or knitting or needlework - the photos and lay-out are lavish. It is a treat for the senses.

And since many of us are strapped for time for our creativity, there are some smaller projects included. Like this table runner - inspired by eastern European embroideries. Lovely.

The simplicity of this quilt is breath-taking. Such a simple motif as little squares. Really pretty.

There are 24 projects in Kaffe Fassett Shots and Stripes including many smaller ones. It is hard-cover and loaded with gorgeous color. If you are a wannabee quilter, or just want to live vicariously through all the quilted textile beauty and goodness, make sure you check out Kaffe's latest work of art.

Here's the good news - STC/Melanie Falick Books has donated a copy of Kaffe Fassett's Shots and Stripes to one of my lucky readers! Thank you to them.

Here's how you enter: Answer the following question in the comments section:
Tell me what your favorite colors are and why?

Contest ends Sunday, February 10th at 11:59 p.m. U.S. addresses only. As always, leave an easy way to get a hold of you.

What a gorgeous book! My quilting has faded into the background as knitting takes over my life, but I keep thinking about going back to it. And red is my favorite color because it's lively and warm and bright and cheerful. I'm andymeg on Ravelry.

I used to do lots of quilting and have been wanting to get back to it.

My favorite colors are purple and green - Purple because it is so rich and makes me happy, Green (a nice yellowy-sagey green) just makes me feel warm and safe and content. If I had to chose between the two, though, I'd go with the green.

I am always drawn to bright colors - my current favorite is chartreuse, or spring green. I will gravitate to something bright green in almost any situation.

I love blues and greens - the colors of water on a bright day, the clear sky, leaves and the shadows of the mountains. Thanks for the chance!

Oh my gosh it's so hard to choose. It would be easier to tell you which I don't like. I love yellow and orange because they are so cheery and remind me of being outside in the sunshine. I love rusts, earthy browns, greens, golds, and dark reds, all the colors of fall because they are warm and inviting and remind me of walking down woodland paths. I love the blues because they are calming, relaxing. You see, it's impossible to have a favorite color. They all have reasons to be loved.

What an amazing book! It would be a good excuse to buy the shot cottons in each color. I love greens, all shades.

Purple and green. My whole life I've been drawn to purple and green. Every coat I've ever owned has been purple or green and I get such a kick out of using both colors at the same time. Lately though, I've found myself drooling over orange wool yarns. I may have to find a project that combines all three!

The photos you have shown are beautiful. I haven't quilted for a number of years, but a book like this could just provide for the inspiration needed. I love color - bright, pastel or darkly rich matter not. However, if forced to choose, I would say blue and orange. They are wonderful complements and beautifully represent a Colorado sunset. It may not hurt that the NFL teams my husband and I have followed over the years are the Chicago Bears and the Denver Broncos. -- Thanks for the adorable lamb fix for today.

Thanks for my daily lamb fix!

My favorite colors have to be the colors of fall in the Blue Ridge Mountains...greens, golds, oranges, reds, coppers, etc. At least they are my favorites for this moment in time!!

I love deep jewel tones. Purples, blues, turquoise are my most favorites. Love the look of this book. In some ways it has an Amish feel.

Hi Kristen,
In my coloring book you and Kaffe Fasset each rate five thumbs up. I've quilted in the past, done lots of batik, and am now dying yarn. My favorite color is the one I'm working with at the moment.

I love the smerk on that little lamb in today's photo.

They are the colors in my Kitchen. I think they are warm and inviting.
Very country feel.

My favorite color is purple, all different shades, it's just such a happy color to me. Recently, I have been liking the combination of brown and light pink, or brown and blue. The combinations with the brown just look good to me.

Carol said...

I absolutely love Kaffe Fassett! What a beautiful book, as always! My colors are purples, ranging from thistle to eggplant and greens with a fresh dash of yellow. What a lovely contest, thank you!

Frances said...

I'm so fortunate to have had several occasions, years ago, to chat with Kaffe Fassett and have him compliment my own knitting.

I love color and it is very difficult to pick favorites...it's the mix that delights. Once upon a time, I might have found ease in choosing blue/green harmonies, then traveled though the infinite varieties offered by neutrals warm and cool. Nowadays, I do love the reds, roses, pinks, lavenders, and even apricot-flavored oranges.

The new book must be a gem, as have been the predecessors.

It's always fun to visit here. Those lambs are very dear.

I basically love color! I guess my favorites are purples and blues, but I don't know why. I'm just drawn to them. I only like greys and blacks and browns as contrast to brighter colors. I love your work, primarily because of your use of color. I also love quilting and took a class from Liza Prior Lucy at the Hampton Quilt Festival that was just awesome. I would love, love, love to have this book.

I'm a quilter and a huge fan of Kaffe. My fave color is YELLOW! All shades. But I love all the bodily fluid palette: oatmeal, eggplant, green, dark red, brown, yellow. (I spared you the bodily fluid names!) Thanks, as always, Kristin!

I love the rainbow of colors. In my main living space, I've got to have Reds (so inviting) and some blue. I wear purple a lot. In color arrangements I am drawn to deep evergreen and turquoise. This combination feels mystical to me and transports me to a very still
place. But when I buy cat food, I always reach for the pink can when their favorite is the purple can. I still can't figure that out.

I quilt more then I knit and love the story that is behind each quilt. I am not sure I have a favorite color because with quilting the pattern that is used works better with some colors or prints more then others, so it is all about knowing how to match the shapes or pattern to the right colors. By these picture the author knows how to do this. OK if you are going to make me choose a color, I pick Red and Royal Blue. But the Oregon, yellow, and white quilt trimmed in brown on my son's bed would not reflect that choice. You can reach me by email at oregoncoastsheepcamp@gmail.com

When I was a child, turquoise and magenta were my favorite colors from the Crayola box of 64 crayons, but I couldn't tell you why - because they were like stained glass? At any rate, years later turquoise is still near the top of my personal list, and magenta's somewhere on there too.

My favorite color is blue - deep blue with a tad of turqoise in it. But my favorite group of colors are the deep jewel tones - that same deep blue with a tad of turquoise, deep purple, burgundy that leans toward the purple side, deep green, gold, and maybe a couple of others - all together. I love the pictures you are showing of this book and as a new sewer, I'm interested in trying my hand at quilting . . .

What I find interesting about color is how my favorite color morphs over the years. I couldn't get enough of that grayed pink in the 60's, moved on to denim blues after that and for a very long time, then it was green. Everything green was fine by me. Now it's turquoise. And red rock orange/brown. yummy!

Wow - beautiful book! I have loved Kaffe since I was 18 and first saw his first knitting book at a Christmas spent in the Adirondacks with a woman who had knit several of his designs. What a force he has played in my color life since then!
My favorite color...hard one, since I love so many, but I think I will go to my old standby: periwinkle. Ever since I was a little girl this was my favorite crayon and I think that is becasue it is a soothing and calm color, but a bit unusual to find in nature. (Incidentally, my least favorite has traditionally been yellow, but guess what I am knitting at the moment...a pair of the brightest, lemonest, taxiest yellow mitts!)

Who knew I'd ever say any shade of red was among my favorite colors?

Today my favorite (100 of my top 5) colors are:

Winter, cold, crisp and fresh. In my mind winter gifts me with time and stillness. The time I share with family and friends, the stillness I invest in solo reflection. Icy whites, silvers and blues appear peaceful, inviting rest and restoration. Underlying the seemingly weightless light colors, the earthy dark greens, browns, purples and blacks defines change and transition. In winter, I see the stark contrast that marks the boundaries between earth, water, and sky. I find the abrupt shift from day into night in the colors of my winterscape. The luxury of time and the beauty of stillness are crowned by resplendent golds, reds, oranges, purples, and blues that mark the sunrise and sunset. However, I treasure the winter's night sky, spread with the richest blues into blacks, made visiable by the piercing silver white of the moon and stars.

Interesting question! I know what my favorite colors are, but I have no idea why. . . jewel tones (red, blue, deep green, purple) and gray. It's kind of a wintry palette, and I have always loved winter. . .

Blue because it's the color of the sea and sky. Red because it looks like...victory!

My favorite colors are blue and green, as they make me feel calmer.

Thank you so much for this generous giveaway, and congratulations on your new wallpaper venture - what an exciting avenue to explore!
