You guys can probably guess that I am a sucker for children's books with a knitting theme. Maybe you are too? I want to share a new book by Author Michelle Edwards. It is called A Hat for Mrs. Goldman: A Story about Knitting and Love.
This story is so incredibly sweet. It is about a little girl who befriends her neighbor Mrs. Goldman. Mrs. Goldman is a very busy devoted knitter who knits hats for all kinds of people.
She teaches the little girl Sophia to make pom poms.
There is more - but I do not want to tell it all. You will have to look for A Hat for Mrs. Goldman. Illustrations are by G. Brian Karas.
I know Michelle through knitting and her book Knitter's Home Companion. It is a small book of essays which was published by STC in 2011. Very sweet. It is still on my nightstand. You might also know her columns with a big yarn company. Michelle is also an illustrator but did not illustrate this book. I've been following her lovely feed on Instagram.
Michelle frequently draws the little Kitten Girl. I love this character - could be that I have a Kitten Girl myself! She has cards for sale on her new on-line shop. She also sells other cards and some of her books.

"The Flower Children" at least I think that is the English title. Die frohe Blumenkind in German I remember if from childhood in an anthology of stories. A few years ago I found it in Germany (in German of course) and I think that must have been the original language. I bought that copy of course! In the markets in Germany there is usually someone making felted 3 inch dolls of the various flower children. I have quite a collection, just because of that childhood book. Story line- the flowers are children sleeping away winter under ground in their beds, then mother nature wakes them and dresses them and sends them out into the world with the insects and they then march across the pages in seasonal order and then come fall she calls them all back to their beds for winter. The drawings are still magical after all these years. Helen
My favorite book as a child was "Wish and the Magic Nut". It was about a koala bear and won an award in Australia. I looked up a copy of it years later and I still love it!
My favorite children's book was The 1000 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins.

What a great book! I would love to read it to my nieces. My favorite book from childhood would have to be the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I loved that Laura was from Wisconsin, just like me :) another favorite of mine was Alice in Wonderland. It's hard for me to choose one book that I love the most because I'm passionate about children's literature. Some of my most wonderful memories of my kids' childhood are of the hours of me reading to them as they sat on my lap. I love anything written by Patricia Polacco. The Harry the Dirty Dog series by Gene Zion is so charming. I also love the Frog and Toad series by Arnold Loebel. As a new grandma, I'm looking forward to read these books again to the new generation. This new book sounds like it has a meaningful message and it would be an honor to be the lucky winner. My favorite children's book is by Dr. Seuss--OH, THE PLACES YOU'LL GO. It is an inspiring book and it gives hope to the child in anyone. "You'll be on your way up! / You'll be seeing great sights! / You'll join the high fliers / who soar to high heights."

I'm 74+ but you prompted me to get down on my creaky-old-knees and retrieve my beloved A CHILD'S GARDEN OF VERSES by Robert Louis Stevenson with wonderful black and white photo-illustrations by Toni Frissell. Unfortunately the covers and
binding are in tatters. But oh, how I loved/love this book!
A close second is anything by Tasha Tudor. Electronic devices can't even come close to the joy these books inspire.

I love "Good Night Moon" I can still here my son as a toddler repeat "shhh" after mush and hush. They are such sweet memories.

My favorite books growing up--Laura Ingalls Wilder, for my kids-oh course- "I'll Love You Forever" ( I cry EVERY time I read it. It is beautiful) and of course "the Chronicles of Narnia" by C. S. Lewis. There are so many more but I will leave it with these.

I bawled my eyes out in the middle of the bookstore the first time I read "I will love you Forever!" And still do, whenever I read it. It's my favourite, hands down. Although there are lots of others to love!

My current favorite is I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark, a wonderful picture book biography by Debbie Levy.
All the preceding comments are terrific reminders of some of my favorites. But my first very favorite book that I read to myself was Walter Farley's The Island Stallion, which then led me to read ALL the Walter Farley books about heroic magnificent horses and the boys who tamed and loved them. My favorite "Little Golden Book" was Maccabee's green suspenders (that had actual cloth strips attached to the cover) about a boy who uncoupled his suspenders from his pants and floated up to sit on a cloud). Charming.

I was an only child, so reading filled many hours for me. I remember saving my 25 cent allowance so I could buy the latest Nancy Drew book. Still among my favorites.

"Hattie and The Fox". A lovely childrens book that was the first book my oldest memorized and read aloud. It's about a chicken who thinks she sees a fox in the bushes. Really cute when a two year old is learning about reading. Thanks for a great blog that always has something I love to read about!

I did a masters degree in school media/library science because I'm a pushover for kids books. One of my favorite picture books is Cocoa Ice by Diana Appelbaum - partly because my family was in the ice business on the Kennebec River in Maine several generations ago and that industry is part of this story. I'd love to give this book to my new grand-niece (after I read and enjoy it!). ctashton at colby dot edu

My favorite book was a book of nursery rhymes from England. I loved the illustrations and my favorite featured a gypy's wagon. It was colorful and decorative which made it seem magical. Sadly it was given away and I no longer have it.
My favorite as a kid was The Pokey Little Puppy. We read that one over and over and over and... :)
I loved (and still do!) The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter.

Delightful illustrations. The first books I remember are A.A. Milne's Pooh books. I loved the two books of stories AND the two books of poems. The poems are such fun to read. They should always be read out loud -- even if you are by yourself. Disobedience from When We Were Very Young is a great example. It is the story of a young boy and his mother.

"Good Dog Carl" is my favorite children's book. I do have many other favorites such as I'll love you forever, The wind in the Willows, Pooh Bear, Peter Rabbit series, The Mitten and others by Jan Brett.

So nice reading all these comments. My favorite book... I'd have to say Alice in Wonderland. But I have so many others.
I loved reading a book called "Alexander's Very Bad, Awful Day" or something similar to my first and second graders. It always helped me to feel better and I hoped it helpded my students to understand that sometimes there were bad days but lots of good days, too.
When my son was little, we'd read a story every night at bedtime. I loved Richard Scarry's Little Bear. It got to the point when I'd tell him it was time for a story, he's wail NOT LITTLE BEAR!! How often does that happen? A child refusing to hear a story...usually its the parent refusing to read a story one...more...time.
~ Favorite book when I was little, "Mr.Rabbit and the Lovely Present", author Charlotte Zolotow & illustrated by Maurice Sendak. The watercolor drawings are very different from Sendak's later work. Its a Caldecott Honor Book. The book is dedicated to: Buena Dapolonia,... and I always wondered WHO belonged to that beautiful name? I used to pretend Buena was my friend.
I also thought Zolotow was a magical name too ! I loVed Mr.Rabbit who helped the Little Girl.
I have to add a fantastic book for children about knitting. It is: "Shall I Knit you a Hat? A Christmas Yarn" Its by two sisters, Kate Klise & M. Sarah Klise. The story & illustrations complement each other so well. Its a perfect Holiday book for children, and adults, who love to knit. The drawings of Mother Rabbit & Little Rabbit staying up late, with Little Rabbit creating the hats, is the perfect chaos that happens when knitting!! All the children I've read it to LOVE it !! and we like making carrot cake as a treat. I even designed a little party for children around the theme of the book.

How can I pick only one favorite book? I do remember loving to "read" Home for a Bunny illustrated by Garth William as a really little child. The Wind in The Willow was another favorite that was read to me when I was older. I loved the the illustrations. It was fun to share these books with my kids. I am a sucker for children books and I will be on the look out for these books. Just wished we had a books store that was closer than an hour away. gnlmutti at gmail.com

As a child, I loved the book "The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew" by Margaret Sidney. It had actually been my mother's book and I cherished it. I loved reading anything by Tasha Tudor to my children when they were little. The illustrations really drew us all in to her world.

My favorite? Gotta be Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. What's not to like: bad kids getting what they deserve, and the good kid getting all the chocolate?

Oh gosh - so many! The ones that stand out though are the Thornton Burgess animal books. They were wonderful. And when my son was young some of his favorites were "Sheep in a Jeep" and "The Little Gardeners."

I am NOT a knitter! But I love your blog!! Please don't ever stop just because of some knitting thing. I love the pictures of your home. I love the lampshades you paint. I save the pictures and try to paint like you....LOL but I sure love the way you make me feel ...the inspiration. Think it's all your happy colors. Just do whatever you want to but please keep posting the pictures. You have so much more to offer than just the knitting thing. THANK YOU ...HUG
