Finally..... and ...... Loving......

All of you regular readers know that I live way away from anywhere. Two years ago, Verizon came through town and strung some DSL lines. 70% of the residents of the town were able to connect to high speed internet service for $20/month. Five roads in the town were not serviced and you know who lives on one of them.

As beautiful and remote as our farm is situated, high-speed internet service is probably not going to happen in the near future. I have been on town committees, gone to see the governor, and I am still hoping. But I finally gave in. I went to Verizon and bought myself an "air card." I had been holding out, against hope, that our residence would someday get high-speed internet access. But frankly, I have given up for the short term. I will continue to work towards "fair internet access for all" but man oh man, I can't believe what I have missed.

Like Dianne of Sheep Dreams who is doing a fabulous Kristin Knits/Julia Yarn Giveaway..... Check it out here and enter before Wednesday evening.

Or Kieren Dutcher's blog "Tyger Voyage."
And these incredibly beautiful Harris Tweed Bags from Kit Mitchell.
And "Dot Pebbles."
And "Farmers Weekly Interactive."
And "Canal House Cooking."

More to come, I'm sure. Tonight, I will leave you with this photo of the lambs in the lower orchard just before Thanksgiving. It's deer hunting season now and I'm not sure I would feel real confident walking down through there except for a Sunday.

This black ewe lamb is quite beautiful.

And I love this guy with curly horns.

And is hard not to love Olympia - star of "Olympia's Knit + Crochet Felted Flowers" and her own series of postcards available on my website shop page. Can you believe how big she has gotten? Chances are she is pregnant now and will have a lamb(s?) by spring.

Olympia's Flower Pattern would make some great quick knitting and crochet projects for the holidays. As a brooch on a coat.....

Or as a bow on a present

that can turn into a barrette.....

Happy Knitting and Crocheting Everyone!

Does it work with your Mac? I read the specs, and it sounds like it's only for peecees.

And, as gruesome as it sounds, if that horned sheep is slated for a little trip "off farm", if you get my meaning, can I have his skull? Happy to pay for it.

This is more for Diane than you since you just purchased your card BUT if you're anywhere near a Sprint tower or can get good reception on Sprint, get thee to VirginMobileUSA.com and purchase yourself a Broad Band to Go package for $40 a month. This is UNLIMITED internet, not the kind that Sprint sells on its aircards now. I switched from Sprint ($59.99/mo) to Virgin -- it's the same company, same tower and better price.

In verifying the web address I see they now have MiFi cards but since I'm a one computer household (and that's a desk top) I don't need wireless but it's nice to know they have it. Heck, Kristin, maybe you could return your Verizon one and go to Virgin Mobile yourself...

Living 600 feet from Athol, MA where I could get cable internet and cable tv but that darn New Salem boundary gets in the way every time...

I saw this, and it made me think of you. The first post of yours I ever read was about moving your herds. :)

Yay! Congratulations on the faster internet.

Surprisingly, we're having similar problems in the Bronx of all places... we're in part of "the most sophisticated city in the world." yeah right. Can't get high speed internet, and the mail service here is run like a third world dictatorship.

Kristin, thanks for your wonderful blog; I so enjoy reading it and love seeing the pictures, too. I live in an area where we can't get cable, DSL, etc. even though we're not that far away from things. We think we must be in a hole or something. We've had to resort to satellite companies.

curious to know what you think of your air card. In our town we are only 15 miles outside of seattle but.... 15 of those are the puget sound, so... we have one cable/internet company servicing our area. For the 5 years we have had service with them it has been terrible. They have replaced every line to and within our home but it is their lines in town that are insufficient for the needs. We pay nearly 70 a month for supposed high speed (which is mediocre, but if you pay for the lower service you will keep being disconnected and dropped it is so slow). We dropped cable television last year just to avoid giving this company any extra money, we do fine with no cable, lol. So, very curious on your air card! please let us know!

Kristin, when I first moved to southern IN, we didn't have internet and I was staying in town after work or going in on weekends. It was agonous. (Is that a word? If not, I make it one.) Anyway, when we got it, we were told (we live in the country, too) that we were the last house on our road to be able to access. Thank goodness. My life is so much better with my own high-speed. Enjoy your card!

The American Recovery act will help fund internet service for those that can't get it any other way. It's through Hughesnet satellite. It's not "high" speed, but it's lots and lots faster than the dial up we used to have.
